An Ode to Oatmeal

By Brandi Goodman

Oatmeal is the warm and hearty breakfast food that provides a quick solution for nutrition. You can make it in numerous ways and include any options you desire. Some add fruit while others mix in spices. Whatever you may choose, oatmeal is a fine breakfast option that offers lots of benefits.

It's Full of Fiber

Fiber is necessary for healthy digestion. It can even help you feel full and lower your cholesterol levels. Oatmeal is full of fiber. A typical cup of cooked oatmeal gives you at least 4 grams. Steel-cut oats and healthier alternatives can provide even more.

It's Heart-Healthy

Your heart health is extremely important to consider. Choosing foods that lower cholesterol and keep your arteries clear is necessary for not only your heart but your well-being overall. Oatmeal is a heart-healthy solution due to the fiber and other beneficial nutrients found within it.

It's Safe for People With Diabetes

As long as you choose a healthier option, such as steel-cut oats, then oatmeal is safe to consume if you have diabetes. This type is lower on the glycemic index than oats that are processed. Your body takes longer to digest these oats which prevents your sugar levels from rising too quickly. You shouldn't be consuming oatmeal every single day, but it's a great occasional breakfast option.

It's Good for Weight Control

Because your body takes longer to absorb the fiber and nutrients found within oatmeal, it's good for weight control. Your digestive process will be slow, keeping you full for a longer interval than with many other food choices. If you're looking to manage your weight, then a cup of oatmeal for breakfast paired with some fruit can be a great start to your day.

It's Rich in Other Nutrients

Manganese, phosphorous, copper, iron, folate, and Vitamin B are just a few of the other nutrients found in oatmeal. You'll get protein as well. With this in mind, you can be sure you're eating a highly nutritious meal when you have a bowl of oats. The fiber and protein content will keep you full, making it an ideal snack as well. Many people use oats for healthier desserts, muffins, and more.

Enjoy oatmeal for your breakfast and gain the benefits. Just be sure you're using the healthiest oat options and not simply heating up an instant oatmeal packed with sugar. The better the oats and the more nuts or fruits you add, the more nutritious you can make your meal.
