Walk the Trails for Mental and Physical Health

By Brandi Goodman

Exercise is beneficial for both mental and physical well-being. You don't have to perform strenuous activities, either, to get those benefits. Something as simple as taking a walk along some trails can provide major advantages to your overall health.

Walk for Weight Loss

Anyone who is hoping to lose weight should start a walking routine. Walking burns calories, increases muscle mass within your lower body, and improves bone density. You can walk for weight loss by getting in roughly 10,000 steps per day. This can lead to a pound of weight loss each week. Strap on a step tracker and hit the trails.

Lower Your Blood Pressure

Physical activity, such as walking, strengthens your heart. It allows for better circulation and helps your heart pump more efficiently. This in turn can lower your blood pressure because your heart isn't having to work so hard. Your arteries aren't receiving as much force. You should shoot for at least 30 minutes per day of walking to see this result.

Another benefit of reduced blood pressure is a reduction in stress. High blood pressure can lead to high stress levels as a hormone called cortisol elevates. A better blood pressure reading due to walking regularly can reduce this hormone and keep your stress levels low. This is good for both your physical and mental well-being.

Improve Your Mood

Walking around the neighborhood is all you really have to do to get those endorphins released and your brain feeling good. Walking through trails, however, can really get you in better spirits. It helps to put things into perspective as you notice the beauty of the world around you. Nature is great for helping you see the good in the world and how you're a part of something bigger than yourself. Trail walking is a highly recommended option for boosting mental health.

Enhance Relationships

You don't have to walk alone. Spending time walking some trails with a loved one is a great way to enhance your relationship. You get some bonding time, which is ideal for your mental well-being, as you both exercise your bodies and improve your physical health as well.

Plenty of trails are available in and around American Fork. Check out Cascade Springs, Silver Lake at American Fork Canyon, Pittsburg Lake Trail, Stewart Falls Hiking Trail, or any of the parks in the area with basic walking space. You'll improve your physical and mental health in the process.
