If You're Over 60, Walk for Good Health

By Paul Rothbart

For good health and longevity, regular exercise is vital. That is a commonly known fact. Aging adults sometimes find it difficult to exercise due to physical problems and fatigue. But seniors need exercise perhaps more than any other age group. Once you are older than 60, exercise becomes critical to slow the aging process and prevent your body from breaking down. The good news is you don't have to pump iron, run marathons, or participate in extreme sports. All you need to do is walk. In fact, for the senior set, walking is the best thing you can do for your health.

It Strengthens Your Heart

Walking is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise there is. Long-duration, low-intensity exercise strengthens the heart and lungs. Taking a 30-minute walk 4-5 times a week can lower blood pressure as well as burn calories that can help you maintain a healthy weight and prevent diabetes. Walking also reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. The British Journal of Sports Medicine published the results of 42 studies involving nearly 2,000 people. The researchers found that people who walked regularly had a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol.

It Strengthens Muscles and Bones

Aging muscles atrophy and bones tend to lose density in the senior years. Both of these conditions can make you vulnerable to injury and decrease your overall level of health. By walking regularly, older adults can keep their muscles fit and strong as well as maintain a healthy bone density. Walking is especially good for the muscles and bones of your legs. It can also help maintain physical coordination further helping you to stay active and in good health.

It Helps You Avoid Depression

Mental health is important at any age. Anyone can suffer from depression, but for seniors, there are extra triggers. Children growing up and leaving home, the fear of lost youth, even concern about how many years you have left, can all lead to depression. Movement has been shown to be an effective way to elevate mood. Walking can help reduce the risk of depression significantly. Research conducted with nearly 5,000 adults over the age of 65 found that those who took regular moderate walks showed much better overall mental health.

Staying healthy past the age of 60 can be challenging. If you add just one thing to your senior lifestyle, make it walking. It can pay huge dividends and help you stay healthy and young at heart. So get out there and take a walk.
