Help Your Children Learn Eye Health
By Brandi Goodman
Children's Eye Health and Safety Month arrives at the perfect time in August. It's important to help your children learn about eye health, especially as they start heading back to school. The sentiment holds true even into September and the remaining months of the school year as your kiddos are out on their own and in need of guidance so they can handle themselves accordingly. You want your kids' eyes to remain as healthy as possible no matter the situation they're in.
Discourage Them From Sharing Glasses
It may seem funny for your child to grab their friend's glasses and try them on. However, you should really discourage them from doing so. Whether they're regular eyeglasses, sunglasses, or anything similar, the frame has touched the person's face. They may hold oil, bacteria, dirt, and germs that can be transferred to your child's face and eyes. Sharing is not caring in this instance.
Encourage Them to Eat Healthy Foods
Healthy eyes can develop with the help of healthy foods. You need to feed your kids nutritious meals and snacks that will keep their hunger satisfied while also working to better their health. Encourage your kids to choose healthier items instead of the common snack desires. Red peppers, carrots, eggs, salmon, sweet potatoes, sunflower seeds, leafy greens, and beans are just a few choices that can benefit vision.
Offer Visually-Stimulating Toys
Toys that encourage motor skills and hand-eye coordination are ideal from a young age. You need to offer your kiddos visually-stimulating toys that keep their eyes working and improve the strength of their vision. Building blocks, puzzles, paints, art sets, pegboards, and more can help their eyesight tremendously.
Teach Them to Rinse Their Eyes, Not Rub
If the eyes are feeling irritated, itchy, or otherwise bothersome, you should try to rinse them with water and flush out whatever may be causing the issue. Teach your kids how to properly rinse their eyes so they can do it easily even if they're away from home. Discourage them from rubbing at their eyes so much, as their hands can easily pass germs and cause a further problem. It also leads to increased irritation in many cases.
Teach your children about the importance of keeping their eyes healthy and safe. They wouldn't want impaired version that prevents them from participating in the things they love. Healthy eyes can last a long time as long as you're keeping them that way.
