No Time for Exercise? Just Walk in Place!
By Genevieve Cunningham
Sometimes it seems like there's just not enough time for exercise. Between everything else we might have going on -- work, school, family, friends -- we just don't have the time or energy to head to the gym. The problem is that we still need exercise, whether we have the time for it or not. Our bodies need to burn calories, build strength, and just move in general. So what are we to do when time is short? Maybe you should try the simple act of walking in place. It might sound too good to be true, but walking in place can help you reach your fitness goals. If you're in desperate need of some movement, take a look at why walking in place may be all you need to get started.
The Benefits of Walking in Place
You may think that walking in place is too simple to actually bring benefits to your body, but even simple activity can make an impact. A few of the benefits that may come from walking in place include:
Weight loss - The more you move, the more likely you are to lose weight. This works best if paired with a healthy diet.
More steps - Many people like to count their steps with an app or a pedometer. Walking in place can absolutely help you hit that step goal. It doesn't matter that you're not covering ground; you're still stepping and it counts.
Versatility - You can walk in place just about anywhere. You can do it while you're talking on the phone, in front of the TV, on your lunch break. You don't need any equipment, so you can literally start stepping at any point to get in more steps and movement.
The Benefits of Movement in General
Whether you choose to walk in place or do another exercise, there's no doubt that movement is both necessary and incredibly beneficial. When we move, we keep our muscles strong and limber. We are better able to maintain our weight, which is good for both physical and mental health. Movement also encourages us to live an active lifestyle, which is crucial for long-term health and happiness. If you're not moving, it's time to start, and what better way than with some very simple walking right where you're at.
Will walking in place get you huge muscles? Probably not. Will it drastically change your body? Again, probably not. But it can definitely help you lose weight and move toward your overall health and fitness goals. And it's so easy, you can do it almost anytime! Consider adding this simple exercise to your daily routine, and be proud of the body you build with more intention and movement in your daily life.
