Good Morning Habits to Start the Day Right

By Paul Rothbart

Unless you're a morning person, the start of a new day can be tough. Awakening and preparing for the tasks ahead may seem daunting. The thought of slumping on the couch with a huge mug of coffee may be tempting, but how you start the day can impact how it all plays out. A solid morning routine will help you feel better and be more productive throughout the entire day. Here are some good morning habits to adopt.

Making the Bed

Making the bed may seem like a lot to ask first thing in the morning when you are not fully awake, but it can have a very positive impact. It only takes a little discipline to make yourself do it, but you will have accomplished your first task of the day only minutes after waking up. This can actually create momentum and the inspiration to continue task after task, with making the bed the first in a chain that will lead to great productivity. It also feels good and can reduce anxiety and stress. Knowing that you have a freshly made bed to crawl into that night is something to look forward to. This habit is absolutely worth trying. I've tried it. It works.

Create an Order to Preparatory Tasks

Before starting work or any other tasks, there are things that must be done. Showering, getting dressed, breakfast brushing teeth. Having a specific order in which to perform these tasks and sticking to it is an excellent habit to get into. When you jump from task to task in random order, it can feel chaotic, creating stress that can carry through the entire day. But knowing that you will do this, and then this, and then this, you have created a path to follow. It is now easy to keep track of progress. It feels like you are getting somewhere. When finished, you will feel ready to begin the larger tasks.

Drink Water

Even while sleeping, you dehydrate somewhat. Your body needs water. It is necessary to hydrate throughout the day and getting started early is beneficial. The body and mind feel better after consuming water. It is far too easy to jump into the work day and realize several hours later that you have not had any water. Don't let that happen. This is another habit that will pay big dividends to your health and productivity.

If you're like me, mornings are a challenge. But they don't have to be torture. By adopting these simple habits, you can wake up, get ready, and have a happy and productive day.
