Slow Down to Enjoy Better Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

As a society, we're always moving. Unfortunately, that movement is rarely the good kind. Instead of exercising and getting involved in the community, we're rushing from work to family obligation to kid's activity. We're busy -- really busy. Maybe too busy. In fact, many health experts agree that our fast-paced world may be damaging our health. But what can we do? We have to keep up, right? Maybe, maybe not. As it turns out, slowing down may be good for our health and our lives in general. If you're eager to enjoy better health and a happier life, take a look at some benefits and tips for slowing down every day.

It's a Fast-Paced World

We live in a world that's faster and busier than ever before. We have so much work and so many obligations. We're always running around from place to place and activity to activity. We literally run ourselves ragged. Is this a good thing? While it's certainly good to be involved, being too busy or overwhelmed only contributes to a decline in both mental and physical well-being.

The Benefits of Slowing Down

Though it sometimes seems impossible, slowing down is one of the best and most effective ways to improve health and enjoy more of life. When we slow down, we are able to enjoy each moment just a little bit more. We lower stress because we no longer have to rush through every task. We have time for rest, relaxation, self-care, and personal healthy habits. According to mental health and physical health professionals alike, slowing down is difficult -- but more than worth the effort once it's all said and done.

Tips for Making It Happen

If you want to slow down, it's going to take some self-discipline. It's hard to go from busy all the time to having some down time. So what can we do? These tips might help:

  • Take it slow - Don't go from a full schedule to an empty one. You'll feel bored and irritable. Instead, cut back just one activity at a time until your schedule is adequately filled.

  • Find something to do - If you're giving up an activity, replace it with something. But replace it with something that's good for you. Pick up a book and start reading. Start scheduling an afternoon nap. Spend some time waking nature walks or laying in the sun. Do something with your time -- just make sure it's something that soothes the soul and betters your health.

Most people are guilty of living their life in a way that's too busy. Too scheduled. Too full of obligations. Take the time to slow down and enjoy life. Doing so may improve your quality of life, make you feel happier on a daily basis, and improve your overall health all at the same time.
