3 Ways to Slow Down and Catch Your Breath in Life

By Genevieve Cunningham

So much of our time is spent moving at lightning speed. We feel like we have to work all the time. Like we have to accomplish something big. Like we have to be engaged and making progress 24 hours per day. But this fast pace may be doing more harm than good. Slowing down can be good for every aspect of our health -- mental, physical, and emotional. But how do we do that? If you're ready to sow down, catch your breath, and enjoy life, take a look at these tips for moving yourself in the right direction.

Take Some Time Off

If you are among the many who never take any days off, it's time to rethink your priorities. Do you really want to spend all your time working with no breaks? Do you really want to give all your time to your job at the expense of your mental health? Of course not! Plan some days off and spend some time relaxing. This allows you to slow down, relieve stress, and remember the important things in life. No matter how hesitant you are to miss a day, take some time and your health will improve.

Do Some Inner Work

It probably sounds cliche -- the whole "work on yourself on the inside" thing. But being at peace means being OK with who you are on the inside. It means being content with your decisions and daily actions. And you can only do that through self-reflection and personal growth. Use a journal, meditation, prayer, or whatever it takes to feel confident in yourself. As you become comfortable with who you are and where you're headed, you'll be able to slow down in your quest for constant approval and soak in the satisfaction of self-fulfillment.

Learn How to Breathe Deeply

Breathing is something we do automatically. We don't even have to think about it. But deep breathing -- the kind that calms your nerves and lowers your heart rate -- is something we learn. It's a skill that we can use to keep ourselves calm and stress-free. Where can you learn deep breathing? Ask a meditation guide, a therapist, a yoga instructor, or just look for some videos online. As you take in deep breaths and exhale slowly, you can let go of the expectations and enjoy a slower pace of life instead.

Slowing down is important. If we never slow down and smell the roses, we'll miss out on so much in life and damage our health in the process. Use these tips to help you slow down and enjoy life, and you can improve your health and your everyday life in no time at all.
