Pass the Peas, Please

By Tom Herrin

Variety is said to be the spice of life.  That can be true in a lot of different ways.  Whether it is social activity, friends, some interests, or food.  Having variety can be significant in promoting better health for most people.  By nature, far too many tend to fall into routines that either remain the same all of the time or contain a lot of things that simply fail to add to the healthier things they need.  It is far too common for people to shun certain foods because they either don’t like them or think they don’t like them. Kids who won’t eat certain foods often won’t because they have not been introduced to them properly.  Peas are something that can produce pretty good results when they are included in a diet.

They May Help Prevent Heart Disease

People need protein in their diets in order to function properly.  Much of this is often provided by meats, however, there are several risks associated with higher consumption of meats.  The fats and cholesterol are especially problems for those who are susceptible to such. Their digestion is also more difficult.  Peas can supply ample protein as well as fiber. The fiber can help to keep arteries clear from substances that can clog arteries and cause serious heart conditions.

They May Help Prevent Diabetes

Peas are considered to have a lower glycemic index among foods.  This indicates that they have a slower release of glucose. This means that those who eat them should have lower blood sugar after meals than those who eat foods that release it faster.  This can be pretty important to those who are bordering on problems with blood sugar. The fiber contained in peas may also slow the digestion of sugar and the absorption of glucose.

They May Improve the Immune System

Peas contain good amounts of copper, iron, zinc, and manganese.  These can boost the immunities. In addition, they contain antioxidants which are well known for their ability to fight disease.  Teaching family members to enjoy peas as a part of their meals can pay some big dividends. I like eating them right out of a can or having them combined with almost anything. Add them to your menu and feel good about their contribution to better health.
