Avoid Injuries in the Cold with Better Planning

By Tom Herrin

There is really no reason to try to avoid working out in the cold weather.  It simply requires better planning.  While many people don't consider having a plan for a workout, they really have some kind even if they don't realize it.  As the temperatures fall, it is critical to consider the possibility that what they have been doing is likely to result in injury if they don't make some adjustments.  The risks of injury, especially to soft tissue, rise quite a bit as the thermometer falls.  Understanding some good options can be a great way to head it off while successfully continuing their workout program at the same time.

Use Space in Your Home

Many times, people think about going someplace to carry out their exercise program.  They may go to gyms, the jogging track, or some other location.  The truth is that there may be some great opportunities to exercise right in their own homes.  Treadmills or exercise bikes may sound monotonous, but they can serve a good purpose.  Moving around within the home to do different things can take good advantage of space.  There are times when people can maintain condition even if they are not moving forward.  The main thing is to avoid losing ground.

Team Up with a Friend

It is somewhat natural for people to want to try to please others.  When they use a buddy for workouts, they can share the experience.  This can also mean shared motivation.  Simply maintaining the desire to do something can go a long way.  A lot of the time, getting started is the biggest hurdle.  Once that is accomplished, the rest may seem downhill.

Let Goals Help Make Plans

Deciding what you are trying to get done is a bigger deal than you may think.  You have to dream it before you can do it.  Keeping the vision before you can help you to keep on moving forward.  I often have to remind myself exactly what I'm attempting to do.  I have to keep my eye on my target.  If we want to have a program that does not take a holiday when the temps drop, we plan around those variables.  Recognizing the best time of day and the best place for your particular needs may be all you have to do.
