Never Shortchange Fish for Its Health Benefits

By Tom Herrin

The fact that people have long developed tastes for more traditional foods does not mean that others have no place in their diets.  Even when people try hard to find new foods to add to their diets they may struggle to go back to the same old things.  An unwillingness to try something new does not change the fact that other foods have value.  One of those that gets sold a little short by lots of Americans is fish.  It is a staple in many other countries largely due to the fact that it is available and some of them are unable to bear the cost of raising other types of foods such as beef.  It is really a healthy food to add to a meal.

It May Reduce the Risk of Stroke and Heart Disease

With the high rate of heart issues and strokes in this country today, anytime people can find something to help they need to consider it.  Poor eating habits and lack of exercise likely play a big role in this.  Failure to make good choices can add up.  Eating fish may be a really good choice.  A study of more than 40,000 healthcare professionals who ate one or more servings per week of fish revealed that they had a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease.

It May Help Deter Asthma in Kids

Some things are simply different and unique.  In one study in which children regularly ate fish, they were shown to have a 24 percent less risk of having asthma.  It is a common problem that interferes with the airways.  If eating fish could really decrease the chances of developing that, it would be worth adding to a child's diet.  There was no indications that it has any effect on adults as far as their asthma.

It Can Taste Good

Fish can be a part of a gourmet meal for many people.  I enjoy eating it grilled, baked, or broiled.  There are so many ways you can vary the meal by adding things to give it different accents that you can have a lot of fun with your creativity.  Whether you really like fish or generally shy away, there are ways to prepare it that doesn't leave that fishy taste.  It is a good idea to incorporate more of it into your meals for the health of your family.  It could be a small effort and price to pay for better health.
