Carbs May Hurt or Harm
By Tom Herrin
Most people are familiar with a saying that refers to something like everything has its place and there is a place for everything. It is obviously meant for maintaining order with things, but it may also work for other kinds of references as well. Foods may fall into a similar frame of reference. There are three main kinds of nutrients, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. There are diets of all kinds that focus on cutting some nutrients while consuming more of others. One of the most recent kinds of diets has people cutting carbs and trying to shift the way the body uses other nutrients. It is an interesting idea and has some merit, even with a fairly extreme diet, carbs have some important jobs to do.
Sugars Can Be Trouble
There are lots of carbs in foods that may be either useful or useless. Many packaged foods that are made to be eaten as a snack or quick item. Lots of them are packed with sugars. They are difficult on the body and add to many health problems. It has been recommended that women limit their consumption of carbs from sugar to 100 calories per day and the men limit theirs to 150. If people look for a place to cut carbs, this is the best place to start.
Good Carbs Can Be Great
For many years, plenty of moms have been telling their children to eat good carbs, though they did not phrase it that way. They spelled it out as needing to eat more fruits, vegetables, and good grains. Eating these can be a great way to be certain that they have the right kinds of foods to fuel the body efficiently. These carbs are necessary for the muscles to do their jobs. When people don't have enough carbs to fuel the muscles, the muscles may begin to be used for fuel. This reduces the amount of lean muscle in the body and can cause an unhealthy situation.
A Little Knowledge Can Go a Long Way
We all could do well to educate ourselves about our nutrition. Eating right is not that difficult, but it does take making some good decisions. We need to make good choices that can help to build our health. I do what I can, but I often fall short. When I do, I try to regroup and go again. Carbs play an important role in our health, but only if we understand what to eat and when. We may need to trim our carb intake, but we must do it right.
