Get Out the Paints and Boost the Meals

By Tom Herrin

It isn't often that people get to have fun and do something that may be really healthy.  A lot of the time, people may see things that make them healthier as a chore.  Meals are something that many may take for granted.  Much of what they do, in terms of meals, is much like Pavlov's dog.  That is, when it is time to eat, they come to the table and dig in.  It is possibly something very similar every day.  To get a little healthier, it may help to break that cycle.  An easy way to do this, and supplement meals to be healthier, is to add color to the plate.

How Are You With Blues?

In the past few years, it seems there has been more attention to foods that are blue, and sometimes purple.  They have a unique place.  Some of them are widely known for containing antioxidants.  These are great for combating some things that damage health.  They may help protect against some cancers and aging.  Many of these foods have found their way to the breakfast table while others are consumed at any time.  Some of these are blueberries, plums, purple cabbage, eggplant, and figs.  That is just for starters.

Yellows Can Round out Meals

At one time, it seemed as if yellow foods were used as a substitute for green foods.  Yellows, or oranges, have a place of their own.  Many recognize them as good for the eyes, but they are also considered to be good to help blood flow and provide support against colds and such common illnesses.  These foods include yellow squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, and cantaloupe.  There are a few more that may be added.

You Can Be an Artist

It doesn't require any special talents or abilities to create healthier meals.  If you can develop an eye for color combinations, you will be well on your way.  Let yourself go and get creative.  As you do, it may help to guide you to some things that you may be able to add to your meals to make them that much better.  Have fun with it, and include the entire family.  Each member may surprise you with their personal contribution.  Let them do their thing, get the most out of each meal.  It can be a healthy blast.
