3 Really Basic Ways to Get More Sleep

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes we make sleep such a difficult thing in our lives. We struggle to fall asleep. We struggle to stay asleep. We live our whole lives in an exhausted state. But living with constant fatigue isn't good for our health. And the truth is that good sleep doesn't always have to be so complicated. Sometimes, there are some very basic changes that we can make to improve our rest. So where do we begin? If you need to get more rest in your daily life, take a look at these three really basic ways to get moving in the right direction.

Go to Bed Earlier

It's too obvious, right? It won't work. It might not work the first time or even the fourth or fifth, but eventually, if you really stick to an earlier bedtime, your body will get the message. Eventually, you'll begin to fall asleep earlier and earlier. The trick is to stick with it! It takes time for your body to create new routines, but doing so can completely transform your sleep and get you a few extra hours of rest.

Create Your Own Space

If you're not comfortable in your space, you're not going to be getting very good sleep. You have to be able to fully relax. This might not be happening if you're sharing your space with someone else, or if you've never really made your space sleep friendly. Do whatever you need in order to create a comfortable sleeping space. Buy new pillows and blankets. Move the TV out. Set up the right kind of lighting. The better you feel, the more you can relax, and the easier it will be to fall asleep at night.

Trick Your Brain

Sometimes you have to convince yourself to sleep. Or perhaps to but it bluntly, you have to trick yourself. This might include putting up black out curtains to keep the room especially dark. You may need to drink a sleepy time tea to make your eyelids heavy. Do whatever little tricks you can to fall asleep. Once you're able to trick your mind, you'll eventually get used to the routine and it will get so much easier to follow through.

If you're not getting enough sleep, you're absolutely going to suffer. Don't let that happen! Sometimes all you really need are some very basic changes to your routine. Use these ideas to set the ball in motion, and get better sleep in your life as soon as tonight.
