Accepting Challenges Can Improve Fitness
By Tom Herrin
Though they may not realize it, people can do wonders for their health by taking up some simple games. Many people have likely forgotten some games they played years ago. While there are some games that require considerable conditioning, it is not the case for all. As a matter of fact, there are some pretty simple games that can do wonders for health with participants only barely breaking a sweat. Table tennis is one of those games that anyone can play and enjoy. Most people have played it at some time in their life and, probably, forgot it was even a game.
It's Good For Coordination And Balance
Table tennis may not be heavy exercise, but it requires pretty good coordination. Even if people don’t have it to start with, a little practice can do a great job of developing it. The game is reasonably fast-paced while not requiring a high level of conditioning. With repetition, it can help to improve conditioning while sharpening those other responses needed. There is just enough movement involved to help develop a greater sense of balance.
It Is Low Stress
Anything that is easy on the joints is usually considered to be low stress. Most people, especially as they become more advanced in age, try to participate in low stress/low impact activities. There is just enough movement while playing table tennis to provide some exercise and increase fitness while still not requiring high endurance. For those who are trying, it is an opportunity to burn a few extra calories while developing more skill and improving anticipation.
It Is Multipurpose
Table tennis can serve a variety of purposes. For older people, it is a great way to socialize. Age is really not a factor in playing the game. Cost is never prohibitive since it can be purchased almost anywhere for only a few dollars. It is a wonderful activity for families as just about anyone can play, and rules can be modified for younger children. If you are looking for that right activity that can serve as an overall benefit for all ages and all situations, try revisiting the game of table tennis. It may just fill the void in your activity schedule while providing an opportunity to do a little socializing.
