Easy to Eat Finger Fruits Can Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

Finding the right kind of foods that may boost health, yet are easy to prepare and can be taken almost anywhere, can be a challenge.  Particularly if you have children, your efforts are sometimes met with resistance. They often prefer not to try anything new as they may have been burned by past experience.  Blueberries seemed to have grown in popularity in recent years and may be small and simple enough for kids to take a chance on. They are sweet and have an attractive color and may be eaten as a snack, dessert, breakfast, or flavorful addition to a meal.

They Are Brimming with Nutrients

Blueberries contain 24 percent of the RDA of Citamin C, 36 percent of the RDA of Vitamin K, and 25 percent of the RDA of manganese.  In addition to these, a serving contains 4 grams of fiber, has only 84 calories, and is 85 percent water. This makes it a great snack that has the ability to curtail hunger and help move food smoothly through the digestive system.  It may also fit well into any diet in which people are trying to cut calories and have balance.

They May Rue the Antioxidant World

There has been plenty of talk about the benefits of antioxidants.  They are able to counter oxidation in the body that can cause illness and general health problems.  Blueberries seem to have more than any other of the common fruits. Antioxidants are also helpful in preserving DNA material.  When this material begins to wear out, it fails to reproduce healthy cells. When this happens, aging occurs. Protecting the DNA material can slow aging in the body enabling people to feel and act younger as healthy cell replacement takes place.

They May Help Deter Diabetes

It seems that blueberries contain some materials that can help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.  Type 2 diabetes appears almost epidemic in this country today, largely attributed to lifestyle. Including blueberries in a diet may prove to have some benefits in combating this problem, though obviously no one thing will be a permanent fix.  Creating a quality diet so that family members will make better choices is the real key. The possibilities with blueberries are almost limitless, so pick some up and let your family find new ways to enjoy them. They may turn out to be quite popular.
