Make a Nap Part of Your Day for Your Health

By Tom Herrin

People today go around tired as a matter of regular practice.  It is not a good one, but it seems that they try to get so many things done that they simply don't allow themselves any opportunities to slow down and take care of some of those most basic necessities.  Food, exercise, and rest are all critical for everyone.  If they want to be successful, they have to find ways to take care of all of these things.  For those who feel that they end up going to bed late and getting up way too early, a nap may be something that can be inserted into their schedules in the right place and at the right time.  It can possibly do some great things for health.

It May Help to Control Appetite

Studies have shown that when people are tired, they eat more.  It may sound a little odd, but the facts back up this claim.  According to a Stanford University study, when people lack sleep, the body will increase production on the hormone gherkin.  It makes people want to eat more.  Lack of sleep also lowers the production of the hormone leptin.  This lets people know when they are full.  A good nap may only be a few minutes, but it can turn around this situation and help to get that eating schedule back in order.

It May Help with Stress Management

Everyone deals with stress of some kind.  Whether it is in their job, school, family, or some other source, it is common and affects all kinds of people.  A study from Allegheny College indicated that a nap may be able to improve people's ability to deal with stress.  In this study, some people were allowed to nap before taking a difficult exam.  As compared to those who stayed awake all day, those who took naps had lower blood pressure after the exams.

It May Help Us Get Along Better With Others

Apparently when we are short on sleep, we are more irritable and judgmental.  Studies have shown that those couples who are lacking adequate sleep have arguments that are more severe than when we are rested.  Our tolerance for one another is not nearly as good.  If those arguments seem to be getting the best of your relationship, try more naps.  It may improve you physically, mentally, and emotionally.  You and your partner may both benefit.
