Stress Is Manageable

By Paul Rothbart

Things don't always go as planned and sometimes we struggle to even find a plan to deal with some of life's problems. It can cause us to worry, often excessively, and it creates stress. However, stress does serve a purpose in that it can motivate you to find solutions to problems and do what you need to do to fix them. It can even help process negative emotions such as grief. But when stress is chronic, it's harmful to both physical and mental health and can impair your ability to function day to day. Stress can be managed and these tips can help you to do just that.

Practice Relaxation

Stress often causes tension in the body. Tight muscles, increased heart rate, and hyperventilation may occur. To counter this, you need to be able to relax. Practicing deep breathing techniques can be very helpful. They slow down respiration and your pulse which helps your whole body relax and puts your mind at ease. Other practices that can help manage stress are meditation and yoga. You can learn the basics and practice these at home or join a class. You can even participate in guided meditations online. Practicing relaxation daily can go a long way toward alleviating stress.

Rally Your People

Human beings are social creatures by nature. Connected with family members and close friends who are good listeners can be very helpful in stress management. They don't have to offer solutions, just a sympathetic ear. Having someone who cares about you and will allow you to vent relaxes your body. It can also release oxytocin, a chemical that puts you at ease and helps you feel good. Don't deal with things alone when you have people available to help.

Laugh

Laughter may well actually be the best medicine. Science supports this. Laughing causes you to take in more oxygen which relaxes you just as with deep breathing. It can elevate your mood and help you forget your problems for a while. Binge-watch your favorite sitcom for a couple of hours or watch a really funny movie. Hanging out with friends who make you laugh can also be very effective.

Stress will always be a part of life but it doesn't have to be chronic. Don't let stress harm your health. Take the steps necessary to manage your stress levels. You will feel better and you may be able to come up with solutions more easily.
