Signs of Hidden Food Sensitivities
By Sara Butler
Food sensitivity has become a hot topic over the last several years. Many people believe food sensitivities play a large role in chronic health problems such as fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, and migraines. If you think you may have a food sensitivity, here are some hidden signs to look for.
You Have a Chronic Health Condition
Irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, migraines, fibromyalgia, eczema, and other health conditions may be an indication of inflammation in your body. Healing the inflammation means you must find the root cause of the problem and that root cause might just be a food sensitivity.
You Eat the Same Thing All the Time
Eating the same foods over and over every single day can lead to food sensitivity. The fact of the matter is that the more you’re exposed to something, the higher your risk of developing a sensitivity or allergy to it.
The best approach to use is to eat a varied diet that is seasonal. Avoid foods that you have had reactions to in the past or foods that are known to trigger inflammation. After some time you may be able to return to foods again, but only once you’ve been able to calm the inflammation.
You Don’t Feel Well
Chronic inflammation doesn’t necessarily make you feel sick, but it does make you feel as if you’re just generally unwell. You may notice:
- Puffy face
- Muscle aches or pains
- Skin rashes
- Acne
- Fatigue
- Stuffy nose
- Sinus pressure
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Mood swings
These are all signs from your body that something simply isn’t right. It may be chronic inflammation that is getting you down, so make sure to try to figure out which foods may be causing it and what you can do to change it.
In general, if you have trouble remembering the last time you truly felt healthy, then you probably need to look a little further into issues with food sensitivities. While food sensitivities aren’t the only thing that can cause chronic inflammation, they may play a larger role than many people suspect. Start a food journal and see if you can trace any feelings of unwellness to certain foods you eat. Consult with a medical professional for more help and to understand how what you're eating is impacting your overall health and wellness.
