How You Can Eat Healthy

It’s easier to start eating healthy than you may realize. In fact, taking small steps over time can help to improve your nutrition and help you to be a healthier version of you. If you can try to incorporate a few small goals into your diet and track your progress along the way, then you can totally change your eating habits. Here are some goals you can set to help you get started.

Go for Half

When you create a plate at any meal, aim to make half of your plate fruits and vegetables. Make sure to get as many colors on your plate as you can, too. Orange, dark green, and red vegetables such as broccoli, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes are all great choices. Throw in some fruit as a side or dessert. This colorful strategy will ensure you’re getting the fiber, vitamins, and minerals your body needs to be healthy.

Go Whole Grains

One of the easiest ways you can make the switch to whole grains in place of refined grains is to try to make at least half the grains you eat whole ones. Instead of white bread, go whole wheat. Look at the ingredients list and look for ingredients that denote whole grains, such as brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal, wild rice, or rolled oats.

Choose Lean Proteins

Seafood, eggs, seeds, nuts, poultry, and certain cuts of red meat are considered lean proteins. These proteins are good for your heart and help to keep you feeling full and satisfied after you eat. Just make sure to choose meat labeled as 90 percent lean or higher.

Keep an Eye on Sodium

Make sure to look at the nutrition label on your favorite foods to check for sodium. If you can choose the lower sodium version of your favorite foods, then go for it. Make sure to get the reduced sodium, low sodium, or no salt added version when you can.

Drink Water

Make almost every drink you have during the day water and leave the sugary, calorie-laden drinks behind. Energy drinks, soda, and sports drinks are full of sugar, so make sure to replace them with unsweetened beverages such as tea or water with lemon or lime.
