Chiropractic Tips for Back-to-School Shopping
By Lana Bandoim
From searching for the right binders to picking out new planners, back-to-school shopping can be exhausting. The shopping lists seem to get longer and more specific every year. The kids seem to get more restless and complain. However, chiropractors have several tips that can help you survive back-to-school shopping.
Find the Right Backpack
Stop the complaints about back pain before they have a chance to start. Chiropractors recommend finding a strong backpack with comfortable and adjustable straps. If your school allows it, then consider getting a backpack on wheels for older kids. Make sure the kids try on the backpack before buying it. The bag has to be big enough for all of their supplies.
Get Ergonomic Supplies
From ergonomic mouse pads to cushioned pens, there are supplies designed to help kids succeed without pain. You can make small changes such as purchasing pencil grips. It is also possible to go beyond the basics and purchase an ergonomic desk and chair for them to do homework at home. Consider getting them a better keyboard or laptop holder.
Pay Attention to Weight
Kids often carry extremely heavy backpacks filled with all of their school supplies. Pay attention to the weight of the items while shopping. Try to choose lighter and thinner folders, notebooks and binders. See if it is possible to combine some subjects so the child only needs one large binder instead of a dozen. Talk to the teacher about leaving some school supplies at school or at home to reduce the weight of the backpack.
Figure Out the Digital Requirements
Whether their school requires tablets or computers, many kids spend hours on some type of digital device. Make sure it is not too heavy and easy for them to use. In addition, pay attention to the color and light contrast. Teach kids to adjust these things, so they do not have to strain their eyes or crane their necks to see the screen. On the other hand, using digital devices can reduce the amount of papers and books they have to carry. Try to find a balance between using a tablet and doing homework by hand.
