Fuel Your Day With a Breakfast Smoothie

By Donna Stark

I can still vividly remember my mother screaming, "Did you eat breakfast?" to me as I ran out the door for the school bus when I was in high school, and I am sure I was not the only one with a mother who did that. You see, the bus came to the neighborhood quite early, and there never seemed to be enough time in the morning for any of us to sit down and enjoy a healthy meal. But, as is with most things, all of the moms had good reason to scream at us through the door because as everybody knows, breakfast is a very important part of the day. And although busy mornings haven't changed for decades, there is a way to start your day off on the right foot. You just need to make a morning smoothie!

Starting the Day off Right

Breakfast isn't called the most important meal of the day for nothing. It helps provide the fuel and energy your body requires and sets the stage for the long hours ahead of you. Thankfully, getting all the nutrients you need in the morning doesn't have to be a huge hassle. Take a look.

  • Protein - Do you find it difficult to get the recommended amount of protein in your diet each day? Well, put down those chicken legs and just add some nonfat Greek yogurt, any kind of nut butter, oats, or protein powder into your morning smoothie! It's a great way to reach your protein goals.
  • Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy, and we all need that in the morning, so don't forget to include them in your smoothie! Try adding bananas, oats, and cooked brown rice. Grains give smoothies a thick, creamy consistency if you completely blend them in.
  • Heart-healthy fats - You can't forget the heart-healthy fats and luckily, they can bring some wonderful texture to your morning smoothie. Some great options here are flax and chia seeds, avocado, and nut butters. Just be careful when adding these because some of them can be high in calories.
  • Vitamins, minerals, and fiber - Looking to create a nutritional powerhouse? Look no further than your local grocery store or market. By adding certain fruits and vegetables to the blender such as kale, spinach, carrots, bananas, and berries to the blender, you might just rock the day ahead of you!

Early Morning Nutrient-Fest

Fueling your body with essential vitamins and nutrients in the morning can be a quick and easy process, but more importantly, it can be an extremely delicious one too! So start blending today! And thank your mom for all of her wisdom. Just don't scream at her as she did to you.
