How to Sleep Like a Baby
By Donna Stark
Are you struggling to get a good night of sleep? Is your rest being disrupted by pain, vivid dreams, or excess worry? If so, you need to do something about it, and you need to do that something as soon as possible! Sleep deprivation is a serious health issue that can have far-reaching and long-lasting consequences. It can affect your physical, mental, and emotional health as well as your relationships with others. If you aren't sure what to do to change the direction of your sleep quality, keep reading. Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have listed a few of their favorite suggestions below.
Stick to a Routine
No matter how much you want to stay up and finish your show or hang out with friends, it may not be the best choice to make because changes to your bedtime routine can contribute to your poor sleep. Try to stay as consistent as you can by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, including over the weekends. It truly does make a difference!
Turn Screens Off
Be honest with yourself. Do you really need to scroll through your social media or news apps every hour of the day? Probably not, so step away from your screens, especially when it is time to go to sleep! Turn your devices off at least an hour before bed so you can reduce your exposure to the blue light that is emitted from them. Blue light exposure has been shown to disrupt the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone that helps regulate your circadian rhythm.
Go Outside
Speaking of light, there is one type of light that we actually need ... sunshine! Syncing your body with the natural light from the sun will help regulate your circadian rhythm too! On top of that, it will give your body an extra dose of Vitamin D. Start your morning off right by enjoying a cup of coffee on your patio or going for a short walk through your neighborhood.
Reduce Stress and Worry
Dreams are a way the body processes stress, and if yours are waking you up, it may be beneficial to learn how to manage your daily stressors better. Exercise, journaling, meditation, breathing techniques, and counseling are great strategies to try for improved sleep.
