5 Cooking Tips From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Many people head to the kitchen to cook a meal with only thoughts of their ingredient lists and dishes needed on their minds. What about your body? Have you ever noticed your back hurting while you're baking or your legs bothering you after standing so long at the stove? With some cooking tips from the chiropractor in mind, you can handle your meal prep without feeling sore afterward.

Wear Shoes While You Cook

Standing barefoot for extended intervals can lead to unnecessary pain. Just as you should while performing any activity, it's important to wear shoes while you cook. A pair of supportive soles will do your body well.

Stand on a Mat

Rubber mats are available that will add some comfort and cushion beneath your feet. These are great to stand on while you cook or even wash dishes. The hard surface of the floor is too harsh on your legs and lower back. The mat will absorb some of the pressure.

Stretch While You Work

While you're standing at the stovetop and working on making your meals, it's important to take time to stretch. Failing to do so will lead to stiff joints and muscles. If you start to feel even a small ache creep in, be sure to stretch out the area of your body that's hurting and release some tension.

Think About How You're Grabbing Your Cookware

Perhaps you have cookware located on the bottom shelf of one of your cupboards. Maybe you have your dishes set up high on a shelf you can't quite reach. Whatever the position, it's important to carefully think about how you're grabbing your cookware and using the correct posture to do so. For example, step on a ladder to reach high shelves rather than extending yourself to try and grab a heavy dish. You could hurt your back in the process.

Stand With Proper Posture

The posture you use while standing at the counter, near the stove, or elsewhere in the kitchen can be the culprit of your pain. If you're standing slouched and slumped to the side, you may develop a fast ache in one leg or area of your back. Make sure you're standing upright with proper posture so you can keep your body from hurting.

Cooking shouldn't lead to pain, but it often does. Follow these chiropractic tips so you can better handle the daily task without feeling aches and pain in the process. If you still discover that a night of cooking has left you sore, stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment. A joint restriction could be in place that's causing you discomfort.
