Can Foods Supply Adequate Iron?
By Tom Herrin
There is plenty of reason for people to be concerned about getting everything they need in the way of nutrition from the food they eat. It is the obvious first place that it should come from. When foods are unable to supply a sufficient amount of whatever is needed for the body to function properly, something may need to be added. If this happens, many times people choose to take various kinds of supplements. Iron is one those things that some people get plenty of while others still have serious deficiencies. For the most part, males tend to have enough while females more often have needs for additional amounts.
It Is Critical For Physical Performance
Iron has a major function in the body. It has a major role in maintaining good health. Iron enables the blood to attach oxygen so that it can be carried throughout the body. Oxygen is burned when combined with foods to yield energy. Respiration is the process of supplying the oxygen the body needs and then getting rid of the excess carbon dioxide that is given off. When there is insufficient iron, the body is not able to utilize food to produce energy. A pronounced weakness will usually occur. A person who is deficient, or anemic, will be noticeably affected.
Some Conditions Or Medications Can Deplete Iron
There are a few unavoidable situations that can lower the amount of iron in the blood. Pregnancy is an obvious one as the mother is supplying all of the things needed for the baby to develop. It is essential that women in this situation receive good supplements. Another common problem for some people is medications. Some of them will reduce the level of iron in the blood. Normally these medications will carry a warning about this, but it pays to ask questions and be proactive.
Good Supplements Are Available
Many people have to take iron supplements because they may be losing it or their bodies are not able to use it correctly. This may be due to their inability to assimilate the iron. There are plenty of supplements on the market with varying strengths and methods of delivery. It is always best to ask. Some people require low doses due to the harshness on their digestive system. If you notice some real weakness, it is a good idea to research your own level of iron and take appropriate measures. If you want to know how much iron is in your blood, you can learn how much for free by trying to donate blood at a donation center or blood drive. You can help someone else and yourself at the same time.
