Dr. Laurent Colvin isn’t just your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic, he is also the owner of the Berkeley clinic location. He has been part of the The Joint family of healthcare providers since opening for business in 2010. Dr. Clovin attended San Francisco State where he studied kinesiology, Dr. Colvin received his doctorate of chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward.
“The thing I love most about being part of the chiropractic field is the instant gratification I get when patients get relief from pain with the adjustment,” he says. “I enjoy working with people.
Dr. Colvin was just voted “Best Chiropractor in Berkeley” by Three Best Rated.
A native of San Francisco, Dr. Colvin lives with his daughter and they have a cat named Sagira and a tarantula named Natasha. In his spare time, he enjoys fencing, knife throwing, and writing.
“I was first exposed to chiropractic when I met my fencing instructor when I was 14,” he says. “Another adult student was a chiropractor and we would talk about the practice after training. Later, when I was a personal trainer, I had numerous occasions when I had sent a client to a chiropractor -- and then that client would perform better on the gym floor.”
The Joint Chiropractic in Berkeley has the distinction of being the first franchise opened in California, Dr. Colvin says, “and my office has become entrenched in the culture.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Colvin says the one thing he always has in his refrigerator are cans of La Croix sparkling water. “It’s a must,” he says. “There is no sugar and it goes down so easily.” If he could gather up different individuals from time for a fantasy dinner party, Dr. Colvin would like to sit down and hear the stories of Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Bernie Sanders, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Colvin would no doubt fascinate them with his hobbies, one of which led to what he says is the coolest thing he has ever done. “I have thrown a knife 80 feet and split an orange,” he says. “And when I did that, I left the knife stuck in the target for two weeks!
Dr. Matthew Kamerzell has been with The Joint Chiropractic since 2011 when he joined forces with the Berkeley clinic location to be the community’s local chiropractor. Don’t be thrown by his last name -- he says you can call him Matt.
A graduate of Diablo Valley College who earned an associate of arts degree, he studied pre-med before getting his doctorate of chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College.
“The thing I find most gratifying about being a chiropractor is providing relief to people that no other profession, drug, or modality can help,” Dr. Matt says. “I also love meeting so many people that I get to know better and be a part of their wellness programs.”
He has worked in the Bay area for a good deal of his career, including Walnut Creek, Antioch and Livermore. An East Bay native, he was born in Walnut Creek and raised in Pittsburg.
In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and competitive target shooting. He also enjoys some more pedestrian things, such as softball and bowling.
It was through his first-hand experience with chiropractic that Dr. Matt knew that chiropractic was his calling. “I had debilitating migraines as a kid, and my first adjustment ever turned it off as easy and fast as flipping a light switch,” he says. “I felt like I discovered a well-kept secret that I wanted to share with others in the same situation.”
He loves being a longtime familiar face to those who enter The Joint’s doors off Telegraph Ave. “Our Joint Chiropractic, in particular, has a small business feel and atmosphere, yet the ability to treat more patients effectively than most offices around us,” he says. “We are in the heart of Berkeley and blend in well.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Matt says the one thing he always keeps in his refrigerator is cheese: “I couldn’t imagine life without it.”
Given the opportunity to pull together the greatest dinner party of his dreams, Dr. Matt says he would take a chance on defying a familiar adage. “I know the old saying about ‘Never meet your heroes because they are sure to disappoint you,’ but I would still meet Prince, Dave Chappelle, Robert Downey, Jr., and Gene Wilder.”
“I’ve seen Prince in concert twice and just barely missed out on two others; he has been my favorite performer since I was 11, and epitomizes unbridled talent,” he says. “Gene Wilder and Robert Downey Jr., have always been my favorite actors and I know in-person they were known to be just as talented and entertaining as they are on screen. Comedians have always had a way of getting me to listen to uncomfortable topics, and are usually very up-to-date on current social movements and divisions within the nation. Dave Chappelle is the voice of our time, reminiscent of Richard Pryor and George Carlin; he has absolute command of his audience when he speaks and knows how to deliver both hard facts and devastating punchlines. He’s an unrivaled communicator.”
Dr. Matt says the coolest thing he has ever done involved some after-hours betting. “My first job was at a bowling alley, and after closing, four of us would put $1 on each game, money going to the highest game,” he says. “I bowled my first 300, a perfect game, and won $3 for it.
