Take Advantage of the Fall to be Active

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people end up sitting around inside over the summer.  Much of this is because of the heat.  Most people are just not accustomed to being out in it and don’t handle it well.  Caution is fine if they will reconsider their activities as the cooler fall temperatures enter the picture.  When these more pleasant days become available, people can reap real benefits by getting outdoors and finding some productive activities to involve themselves in.  They may soon realize that they are able to be out and active without suffering from the brutal effects they may have to deal with in summer.

Dust Off the Bicycle

Chances are that many people have a bicycle tucked away somewhere in storage even if it belonged to a child.  With the fall temps, they will be able to ride for a little time without becoming excessively tired or overheated.  Their greatest challenge may be getting accustomed to the seat again.  Bicycle riding can be a low impact exercise that does not overtax the joints.  It is also fun and can be rediscovered with only one ride.

Take Part in the Harvest

Quite a bit of exercise can be had from going out and picking some food from its natural source.  For me, picking up pecans can take up to an hour each day while providing a reasonable amount of moderate exercise.  There is considerable bending and stretching to go along with it.  A couple hundred calories can be burned with such an activity.  It adds up quickly.  In your area, picking apples or some other fruit may be more readily available and can do the same things.  Concentration on the task tends to make it seem less like exercise and more like a productive undertaking.

Be Your Favorite Team

Fall also seems like a time when a lot of us get involved in watching college athletic activities.  Games such as touch football or pickup basketball don’t have to be intense.  They can be very moderate and still provide a means of interacting with others while getting a little exercise.  As long as you keep it slow paced, you can see an improvement in your health as you do so without overexerting yourself.  Such activities have been great for me in the past.  They have enabled me to get in much better shape while motivating me to stay on a better diet.  It can been a win-win situation.
