A Smile and Health Go Hand-in-Hand

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of different ways to have an impact on health.  Diet, rest, and exercise can each play a big part in managing and/or improving health.  The simple things may be of little value or they may make a marked difference in maintenance of better health.  People spend quite a bit of money in efforts to find ways to become healthier.  Non-verbal communication can be an effective way to express oneself to others.  It can create a good environment.  It can also improve the health of the one who provides the communication.  A smile can go a long way.

It Can Make People Better Workers

Smiling can improve creativity.  When people are more creative, they will be better able to be an effective problem solver.  This is a huge plus in many jobs as they require workers to solve issues on major projects or even everyday situations.  There is also the old notion about happier workers being more productive.  When workers are happy, they tend to look at a task as an opportunity more than just a chore.  Time passes better and other workers may have their outlooks lifted as well.  Those who smile more are thought to be considered more often for promotions.

It Can Make People More Attractive

Whether they want to admit it or not, most people have a desire to look better to others.  Studies have shown that those who smile are more appealing to others.  That should be a given.  Who doesn’t like someone with a big smile.  Men are more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact.  There tends to be a greater level of trust for those who smile.  Studies have also shown that smiling can make people look as much as three years younger.

It Can Improve Basic Health

When people smile, their facial expression begins a chain reaction that makes the body relax.  This lowers the heart rate and reduces stress.  It can contribute to improving the immune system, allowing it to react with greater efficiency to external factors.  It can release endorphins that can help to dull pain.  According to one study, people who smile may expect to add as much as seven years to their lives.  Those can be pretty big results for the mere effort of a good smile.
