Technique Can Be Important When Walking
By Tom Herrin
Having the right kind of form whenever people do any kind of activity can have a great impact on the success of the endeavor. Whether it is jogging or exercise class, the way people carry themselves can make the difference in whether they are able to perform that activity with enthusiasm or not. When they use bad form, they may stress or strain parts of the body and end up with aches that can take away from the enjoyment of the activity. Walking is no exception to this. Many people walk without really giving much thought as to whether or not there is any correctness to it. As a result, the experience is not a good one. Using good form may serve as a motivator to do more.
Good Posture Can Help With Walking
Most people likely feel that they simply walk however they do, and it is fine. While it may get them around, developing good form can make a large difference. It is important to keep the body upright, tuck in the stomach, and keep the head relatively level to the ground. This can help with breathing as well as prevent some of those aches. Focusing the eyes on a point well ahead can also be helpful in avoiding some unnecessary wandering as they walk.
Proper Arm Movement Helps
It is useful for people to find a way to limit excessive arm movement. Moving the arms with a purpose can make the outing much more productive. People should try to avoid reaching way up and should keep the arms from flinging out. Keeping them closer to the body is more efficient. The hands should be kept somewhat low as well. Not letting the hands and arms get too tight can also help make the walk more pleasant.
Try to Enjoy It
If you set out to make walking a part of your exercise program, find a way to have fun with it. If you use bad form, you will almost certainly tire easily and dread doing it again. Develop good form and you will find that you are able to walk a longer distance for a longer period of time. Walking with a friend or family member may help. Once you work and have that form down right, the rest will seem much easier. You will probably find that you often don't even realize just how long you walk. That is a pretty good feeling.
