Treadmills Are Not Just for Recluses

By Tom Herrin

When people think of those who exercise on a treadmill, we often think of someone who isn't much into socializing.  This may be true, but it also may be that the individual does so for some other reason.  Many who use a treadmill have some specific purpose in mind.  They may be protecting themselves from something or focusing on some particular thing they are trying to work on.  Either way, treadmills can be a good tool for just about anyone to use.  They offer several advantages over relying on getting outdoors to walk or run.  Some people use them almost exclusively as their main source of getting exercise.

Treadmills Are Widely Known for Helping the Heart

Many people suffer from various kinds of issues involving their heart.  Some of this may be due to lack of exercise, and some may be from other underlying problems.  By using a treadmill, they can set the time for their workout as well as the speed.  Since they are usually doing this in some kind of controlled environment, they are not having to deal with factors such as excessive heat or cold.  Rainy weather is never a concern.  By establishing the routine that is best for them, they can monitor their progress and more easily avoid overdoing it.

Treadmills May Help Improve Bone Density

There are lots of people today who are concerned about the condition of their bones.  Osteoporosis seems to be increasingly common.  Running on a treadmill is believed to help improve bone density.  Load-bearing activities are considered to be among the best ways to do this.  Using a treadmill can help to accomplish this along with lessening the impact from running on a hard surface.  This control of the treadmill can provide some peace of mind as well.

Be Open About It

There was a time when I was pretty resistant to the idea of using a treadmill.  I really enjoy being outdoors.  When I finally came to grips with the idea that something had to be better than nothing, I broke down and began to use one.  Even though I used it for a somewhat short workout, I enjoyed the results.  I felt better physically and emotionally.  I had a feeling that what I was doing actually made a difference.  If I wanted to do something late at night, I could without making any major changes in my schedule.
