How You Can Stop Overeating

By Sara Butler

Overeating is a problem for a lot of people. In fact, people on average get about 4,000 calories they don't need over the course of a week due to overeating, according to a Google survey. If you're someone who overeats, then it's important to understand your behaviors and take action to curb them for the sake of your overall health and wellness. Here are a few things you can do today to stop overeating.

Set Some Boundaries

Everyone has trigger foods that they could spend all day munching on. For some it's potato chips, for others it's candy. No matter your trigger food, it's important to set some boundaries.

You shouldn't try to stay you'll never touch a particular food again. Instead, set boundaries such as you're only going to enjoy chips on the weekend and not more than one bag. As long as you have objective boundaries set yourself, you may be surprised how easy it is to limit trigger foods in your life.

Stock Your Kitchen

If you want to try to move away from unhealthy eating habits and overeating, then make sure you fill your kitchen cabinets with foods that are good for you. This can help you to combat feelings of having nothing to eat when a craving strikes. If there's always an alternative snack option that's healthy available, you'll have a much easier time controlling your impulse to overeat.

Think About It

Why are you overeating? You need to recognize why you may be having too much. For some people, it's a habit they formed when trying to cope with stress or perhaps sadness. Really think about what has contributed to your overeating and try to find ways to combat it. Often, just recognizing why you're doing something is a good way to begin to stop it.

Socialize

A great way to stop eating so much is to get out and get active. Meet up with someone you know for a walk or connect online with family that doesn't live nearby. Make sure your social interactions are consistent and frequent. This will help you to stop thinking about food and make you happier in the process -- a win-win!

Overeating can be complicated, but just recognizing that you're doing it is a step in the right direction. Being mindful about what you eat and how much can have a huge impact on your health.
