Keep on Building Health in the Cold

By Tom Herrin

Just because the temps drop, there is no reason for people to drop their plans for better health as well.  It often requires a few changes in order to make it work, but working out in the cold can be just as rewarding as it is in mild temperatures.  It simply takes a little different mindset.  When people are prepared, they will be able to continue their program with no real hitches.  Whether it is conditioning for the temperature or working to increase motivation, it can be managed much more easily than many would believe.

Only Stay Outside a Little at a Time

People can make a big mistake by plunging into the cold.  Even though many like the cold, it is generally having the ability to remain warm while they are out there in it that feels really good.  Getting out there and staying for too long can simply be miserable.  Going out for short periods of time, then retreating to some warm place can help build tolerance.  After doing this for some time, they will find that they are able to bear it longer than the time before.  Setting a goal each time can help people to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Eating Well Can Be Good Prep

Rather than eat a heavy meal that one might believe would keep them warm, it is better to be sure to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables.  This will provide a good supply of vitamins and other nutrients.  Many of these also have a high water content that can help to offset the chance of dehydration that's often experienced in the cold.  Supplementing this with adequate amounts of meat or other protein sources can round out the needs that are found in this cold.

Avoid Stopping Too Soon

A big mistake many make when working out in the cold is failing to keep moving.  Just as we need to warm up well, we also need to cool down.  This can be done the most effectively by continuing movement for quite a bit of time after ending exercise.  Those materials that are burned in the activity must be removed from the system similar to exhaust in an automobile.  Slowly cooling down can do this.  The likelihood of muscle cramps is much greater when you stop suddenly.  You don't have to work that much harder in the cold, just work smarter.
