Play an Outdoor Card for Good Health
By Tom Herrin
Living life to the fullest is what should be the objective for everyone. After all, who would want to live short of their fullest potential and opportunities. For those who work, go to school, or do many other things, staying so busy often means spending lots of time indoors. It may not actually be the choice of everyone, but it becomes inevitable for many due to the nature of what people do and how they do it. For those who may not really be aware, there is a whole world on the outside just waiting. And if they want to do something to improve their health, it may be possible to do so by spending more time outdoors. A simple way is to do some camping.
It May Encourage Better Sleep
Lots of people run short on sleep practically all of the time. There are simply so many demands on their schedules and never enough time to do it all, or so it seems. A good way to make some things happen in the way of sleep is to camp. Spending time outdoors can affect the way the mind and body work. According to a study from the University of Colorado, when people spend more time outdoors, they tend to adjust to the sun's schedule. This can mean they get up when the sun rises and begin to wrap up their day as it sets. Anyone who has camped can likely attest to the fact. It may, at least, feel as if they are sleeping better when they are camping.
It May Offer More Vitamin D
Vitamin D is different from so many other vitamins in that it is not all provided by food. As a matter of fact, much of it comes from the sun. This is probably the reason that so many people are lacking in it. It is unfortunate because it is believed that it can help to prevent some cancers, high blood pressure, and heart disease, as well as several other health conditions. Spending time on a camping trip may allow people to get enough sun to improve their supply of this important vitamin.
It May Mean Better Motivation
Much of the time, when we don't get enough exercise, we just can't get going. Finding motivation is always a challenge. When we camp, it seems to inspire me to get out and hike, climb, and explore. I am much more interested in getting up and doing something. We often carry outdoor games with us and play them a good bit. It is hard to say why we don't play the same games at home, but it is possible that when we camp, we are away from the normal distractions and can stay focused. Whichever the reason, we enjoy it, and I would wager to say you will, too.
