Support the Brain With Exercise

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of good reasons for people to be concerned today about brain function.  Taking a look around can reveal the need for people to take preventative action whenever they can.  It seems that they are all kinds of issues that involve the mental function that may well be avoided.  While there may have been a time in which it was thought that much mental decline was destined to happen as a result of aging, many studies now contradict that notion.  In fact, many indicate that the same things that can protect the health in general may also do things for the brain.

Exercise May Help Prevent Dementia

It is no secret that stress levels in this country may be on the rise.  It is also well known that stress can damage health.  Studies indicate that those who have higher levels of stress may be more likely to develop dementia later on.  This is more than a little scary.  The good news is that regular exercise is a good way to reduce stress.  It can help to promote the release of chemicals that can make people feel good.  This is a key to stress reduction.

Exercise May Support Healthy Neuron Development

The brain is complicated.  It has a complex network of parts that work together to make learning happen.  When people learn new information or skills, neurons must assimilate this and deliver it to the right places.  At one time, it was thought that they could not really be affected by other factors, but now it is believed that exercise may help to improve their growth and development.  It may be possible for new neuron growth to take place and make the brain work better.  That means a greater ability to learn new information.

Maintaining Our Brain Function Should Be a Priority

I feel that my health is important enough for me to make it high on my list.  If I don't take care of it, who will?  With the knowledge available to us today, it is possible to add our mental function to that list.  Exercise is a key to both.  The last thing I want to do is let myself decline mentally because of neglect.  I never mind exercising anyway, but when I have more specific motivation, it is that much easier.  I have seen too many people suffer mental deterioration to take all of that for granted.
