How to Successfully Create a Running Habit

By Genevieve Cunningham

So you’ve given it a lot of thought, and you’ve decided that running is your next big goal. You want to run miles, lose weight, and join in on the jogging community. There’s only one problem: You have no idea where to begin! If this sounds familiar, don’t fret. Running is a great habit to keep in your life, but it’s also a tough one to incorporate into your life. If you’re interested in becoming a runner and making the habit work in your life, take a look at these habits to help you get motivated and find success long-term.

Pick the Right Time

You should plan to run at the time of day when you feel the most motivated and energized. For some people, this might be first thing in the morning. For others, it might be late at night. And still for others, it could fall anywhere in between these two extremes. Why does time of day matter? If you try to run at the time of day when you’re feeling the most tired, rundown, or lackluster, you’re far less likely to actually get out and make it happen.

Buy All the Gear

If you’re not prepared to run, it’s not going to go well. How do you get prepared? You need to make sure that you have the supplies. It doesn’t take much, but having the proper gear makes a huge difference. If you’re serious about making running a habit, buy supportive shoes, comfortable clothes, headphones, and anything else that makes you feel comfortable and motivated.

Listen to Your Body

Anytime that you exercise, it’s important to listen to what your body is trying to tell you. Are you feeling more tired than usual? Are you getting sick? Is your body simply not feeling it today? Believe it or not, these things matter! Especially in the beginning of your running journey, listen to your body and respect its boundaries in order to find the most success.

Don’t Go for Broke

Do not try to run a mile on your first time out. If you go for too much too soon, you’re going to get sore, discouraged, and you’re far more likely to quit. If you’re serious about the habit, you need to start very slowly. You need to run a very short distance very slowly. As your body gets used to running, you can increase your speed and distance. But take it easy on yourself, and you’re more likely to stick with it.

Running is a tough habit to keep. It’s hard on the body, a challenge on the mind, and requires serious dedication. But these tips can help make the process easier. Use them to get you started, and enjoy a fit body and better health for years to come.
