Layers Can Ensure Success in Exercising in the Cold

By Tom Herrin

At one time, the thought of exercising outdoors in the cold meant wearing some really heavy clothing.  It became a little counter-productive due to the weight of the clothing.  There was a time when I worked at a job in really cold temperatures, and we wore thermal underwear, flannel shirts, and heavy coats.  As we warmed, we began to remove layers and often ended up working in the thermals.  Since we were using one of those diesel jet heaters, this worked.  There are a lot better kinds of materials available today.  For exercising in the cold, a little bit of planning, and forethought , can make our program continually successful as well as enjoyable.

Start Out Right

The old idea of wearing sweat pants and tops is pretty much obsolete. They were often heavy and became saturated with perspiration.  Modern technology has allowed the development of fabrics that can serve our purposes much better.  A tight-fitting base layer that is lightweight is considered best.  It should wick away moisture while allowing good airflow.  This can help you to dry as you perspire and avoid excessive heating.  We need to keep in mind that comfort is the ultimate goal if we are to stay motivated.

A Critical Middle Layer

The primary job of the next layer is to insulate.  We have to remember that we are trying to remain at a temperature that is somewhat constant.  Too much heating or cooling can discourage us from continuing.  This layer should insulate us.  Traditional materials of wool or fleece can work, but there are also many other fabrics that perform well.  It should still be lightweight and allow moisture to leave and air to flow through.  Some of the best of these have things such as zippers, collars, and cuffs that can make the desired fit.

A Tough Exterior

Just like so many other things, the job of the outside layer is to protect everything inside.  It needs to resist rain, wind, and abrasive objects.  It should still allow air to move through it.  The most functional type of outer layer should have parts that are easily removed.  This can help to maintain a desired temperature that is critical to having the success we all seek when we are involved in such an activity, and that is the very reason we go to the effort in the first place.
