Chiropractic Guidance on Working at a Desk

By Brandi Goodman

Desk work is common for many employees. Whether you're an administrative assistant who sits at the front of the office greeting customers and taking calls or you're a writer or editor who spends time researching and writing or editing articles, sitting for long periods can take a toll on the body. Follow guidance from a chiropractor when working at a desk and you'll be more likely to end your days free from pain and stiffness.

Find Time to Walk and Stretch

Leg pain is a common complaint of desk workers. You need to find the time to walk and stretch if you have any hope of preventing blood clots that can form from too much sitting. Walk on your lunch break, take the stairs instead of an elevator, hand-deliver any documents to co-workers, and stretch while you're sitting regularly. You need to find ways to keep your legs moving.

Redesign Your Workspace

Make your surroundings accommodate you and your needs rather than accommodating to your surroundings. This means redesigning your workspace so that it's beneficial to your body. Make sure the computer screen sits at eye level so you don't have to strain your neck. Adjust your chair so your feet touch the ground and your back is straight. Have supplies within reach. You may even want to consider a standing desk if your workplace allows so you aren't having to sit for such a long duration.

Follow the 20/20/20 Rule

Every 20 minutes stop and look at an object that's 20 feet away. Hold your gaze for 20 seconds. This 20/20/20 rule should always be followed whether you're working or performing an activity for a while. You'll give your eyes a break as well as prevent neck pain that can develop after sitting looking at the same thing for so long.

Schedule Chiropractic Visits

Regular visits to the chiropractor are in order for all desk workers. You're likely to develop discomfort if you're sitting for long durations, but a chiropractor can help. Joint restrictions or subluxations that are present in the body can make you feel stiff as it is and limit your range of motion. You may find it difficult to move and stretch as needed throughout the day because of this, which will only lead to worsening problems. Stop in at Joint Chiropractic during their walk-in hours and get an adjustment that may allow you to better handle your work duties.
