5 Ways to Improve Hearing Without Hearing Aids

By Chris Brown

Losing one's hearing is a scary occurrence but, to some degree, inevitable with age. As one of the primary senses, hearing defines how we experience the world. Because of this, hearing impairment can impair both the ability to fully understand situations as well as how one is perceived by those around them. Unfortunately, most hearing impairment is progressive, meaning it reduces with time. The rate at which hearing loss worsens, however, can be mitigated (or even partially reversed) with some tricks and lifestyle changes.

One of the primary treatments for significant hearing loss is the fitting of a hearing aid. However, hearing aids can be uncomfortable and embarrassing for some. Plus, hearing aids are small and easily lost, making them useless to the wearer when gone. Before installing a battery-powered device to the side of your head, below are five methods of improving hearing without a trip to the specialist:

  • Remove earwax impactions - The simplest way to open up sound is to simply remove any earwax impactions that may be physically blocking the ear hole. It is important to not stick anything into your ears yourself, so consult a doctor there is something that requires removal.
  • Supplement with essential oils and roots - Supplementing with ginger, ginkgo biloba, and tea tree oil have all been connected to decreased tinnitus and improved hearing.
  • Eat foods with hearing-boosting minerals - Certain minerals are important for preserving and rebuilding hearing, including potassium, magnesium, and zinc. These minerals work by maintaining important ear fluid levels, helping to provide the inner ear with oxygen, and warding off harmful bacteria.
  • Train your brain to hear better with a hearing app - The brain and ear work symbiotically to translate the sensation of sounds. One way to improve hearing is to sensitize your brain to audio stimuli with one of the many hearing games and apps available.
  • Chiropractic adjustments - Chiropractic manipulation has shown promise in being able to return hearing for near-deaf patients. So, even if you are not at a near-deaf level, clearing the spinal restrictions that may be hindering your hearing abilities could be exactly what is needed to bring you out of the murmur.
