Dr. Gordon Kernes, DC
Dr. Gordon Kernes’ journey to The Joint Chiropractic in Pasadena’s Hastings Ranch has spanned a couple of continents, grueling athletic achievement, and countless adventures as a soldier and student.
With all he has seen and done, Dr. Kernes knows well the value of being in optimum shape both physically and mentally, and the edge one gets from chiropractic care and the foundation it provides in the day-to-day activities of life -- as well as the not so day-to-day activities.
“I have watched my patients, many of them in debilitating pain, conclude their treatments using my methods, pain-free and rejuvenated,” Dr. Kernes says. “Given that so many of us suffer from some form of spinal dysfunction, I know I can help you start your journey to recovery today.”
Dr. Kernes’ own journey began in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was born and raised; he grew into a disciplined athlete and then an accomplished healthcare professional. As such, he has successfully treated hundreds of patients who now lead pain-free lives. His unique technique combining gentle and effective chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitation exercises make him a leader in the profession.
As a student in South Africa, Dr. Kernes swam competitively for 12 years. When he reached his teens, he began running 10-mile races, and by the time he was 21 was participating in ultra-marathons, those races that extend beyond 26.2 miles.
That early commitment to fitness drove Dr. Kernes’ treatment methods. After high school, Dr. Kernes entered the South African National Defense Force, where he continued to learn discipline, earned the rank of corporal, and grew a fierce tenacity to protect life.
After completing his military service, Dr. Kernes began training for bodybuilding competitions, eventually winning all the major South African titles. He moved to Los Angeles in 1985 and worked as a personal trainer until 1996. He also continued to compete in the bodybuilding arena and won the overall title in the California Grand Prix in 1989, fourth place in the USA Championship in 1990, and fourth place representing South Africa in the 1992 World Championship. He retired from competition shortly thereafter.
In 1997, Dr. Kernes entered Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles in 1997. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology in 2000, and Doctor of Chiropractic in 2001. He graduated Cum Laude and was accepted into the prestigious Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges for his outstanding educational achievements. Dr. Kernes practiced in the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills area for more than 15 years.
He and his wife recently moved to Sherman Oaks with their two young boys who fill their lives with joy and lots of activities. Dr. Kernes enjoys spending time with his beautiful family, hiking, swimming, triathlons, fishing, and chasing his sons around the soccer field.
“I’ve had a wonderful, remarkable journey to reach this point in my life,” Dr. Kernes says. “Almost nothing gives me greater satisfaction than using those experiences, and that education and training, to help my patients reach the point so that they can achieve their goals and enjoy their own experiences.”
