Dr. Mike Massengale became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when he began serving residents in Asheville, where he also manages the operation at the West Asheville clinic location.
“I love what I do, I love helping people get out of pain,” he says.
Dr. Mike, as his patients call him, is a self-described military brat who moved more than 50 times while growing up, though he spent most of his time in Georgia until he was 14, and then northern Utah.
He and his wife have two daughters and a son. Among the things Dr. Mike enjoys is hiking, camping, being outdoors enjoying nature, and doing remodeling jobs around the house.
He earned his doctorate from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Ore., and earned MBA and MHA degrees from Walden University in MInneapolis. He worked for years in Salt Lake City and was the chiropractor for the Utah Grizzlies hockey team.
Among the patients that Dr. Mike most appreciates are those with headaches: “Most patients that have multiple headaches per week can get relief after just a few chiropractic treatments.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Mike’s is a big fan of The Wheel of Time series of books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.
The one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is pepper jack cheese: “It’s a great snack and can be added to many meals.”
Some of the best advice he could give goes along with the best advice he ever got. “My parents always told me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to,” he says. “The advice I would give is to enjoy life and don’t wait.”
The North Asheville clinic location is proud that Dr. Ken Hicks joined its team in 2022 to provide important healthcare services to the local community.
“I always loved helping others and working at The Joint gives me the opportunity to do this every day,” he says. “I love that the job is physical -- as opposed to a desk job -- because it helps keep me healthy.”
Dr. Hicks worked previously in Roswell, Ga., Blacksburg, Va., Mannington, W.V., and Chattanooga and Johnson City, Tenn. Born in Roswell, he moved to North Carolina while in middle school.
He and his wife have “a sweet and silly black Lab that just seems to love everyone.” His hobbies include hiking and photography.
Dr. Hicks earned his doctorate of chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, Ga., after getting his bachelor’s in psychology at Appalachian State in Boone.
“After suffering from gastrointestinal issues for years with no good answers or solutions from the medical community, I saw a chiropractor and my chronic issue resolved itself in a matter of weeks,” he says. “This piqued my interest in becoming a chiropractor.”
It has led him to some great professional moments, including one early in his career. “I had a patient who could not lay down or she would throw up,” Dr. Hicks says. “I wasn’t sure what to do, so I propped up a table against the wall and had her lean on it so I could adjust her. It worked well and she greatly appreciated it. After a few weeks of adjusting her this way, she was able to lay on a regular table for her adjustments. She credited this to her chiropractic care.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Hicks’ ideal dinner party would include comedians Steve Martin, Ellen DeGeneres, Robin Williams, and Kevin Hart “because laughter lightens our load.”
One of his most amazing adventures involved him and two wheels. “I took an off-road solo motorcycle trip across the U.S. called the TransAmerica trail,” Dr. Hicks says. “It added to my confidence regarding handling difficult situations by myself.” Perhaps that’s why the title of his biography would be called Little Adventures.
He always keeps peanut butter stocked in his refrigerator: “It’s an easy go-to snack I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid.”
A book that has been influential to Dr. Hicks was written by Victor E. Frankl titled Man’s Search for Meaning. “It showed me what we’re all capable of doing,” he says.
Dr. Reema Arsheed joined The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2022 when she began serving residents in Asheville, where relishes the opportunity to do the work she finds so rewarding.
“There’s no job greater than helping people learn more about taking care of their bodies,” she says. “People are almost always happy to see the chiropractor. It’s a very fulfilling career.”
Dr. Reema, as she is known to her patients, has worked previously in Dallas, and the Georgia cities of Hiram and Marietta. She was raised in northern New Jersey, and she enjoys hiking, swimming, growing plants, and playing with her cats, Blackie, Benji, and Zola, a Siamese snowshoe that is the same breed as “Grump Cat.”
She earned her doctorate of chiropractic from Life University after getting a bachelor's degree in psychology and biology from Rutgers.
Dr. Reema’s first-hand experience made her a believer in chiropractic. “A chiropractor fixed my childhood knee pain of eight years when nurses and orthopedists could not,” she says.
“The whole body is connected in interesting ways. A headache at the temple region can be caused by a simple tailbone misalignment.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
If she could bring together any four people for her ideal dinner party, Dr. Reema would love to sit down with funny women Betty White, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Aubrey Plaza.
She would no doubt talk about her most memorable journey “traveling to Costa Rica and experiencing the culture as locals did. It gave me a good perspective on my life’s blessings.”
Dr. Reema says chips and salsa are her favorite snack, and she loved the book “The Golden Compass” because it “was a great adventure book from the perspective of a child.”
