A college injury during springboard diving left Dr Karen Bisesi, “Dr K” with a neck and shoulder injury that couldn’t be solved by a number of health practitioners she visited. Athletic trainers, medical doctors, physical therapists, orthopedists and more tried various interventions such as ultrasound and cortisone shots, but nothing helped. She went to a chiropractor who was able to help her recover. In addition to resolving her neck and shoulder pain, the migraines she experienced since childhood went away and never came back! Looking back this injury was a “blessing in disguise” for Dr K as it lead her to her calling as a Doctor of Chiropractic.
Dr K completed a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Pepperdine University where she worked as a a Student Athletic Trainer for the Men’s Basketball and Volleyball teams. Then, she enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic West in Northern California. A move to the Midwest led to transferring to National University of Health Sciences in Chicago, where she graduated with honors with her Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in 1995. She has been in private practice in Indianapolis, Indiana for 25 years before relocating to Arizona to be near family and work for The Joint. However, Dr K grew up in San Diego, CA and is thrilled to return to her beloved southwest.
Over the years, Dr K has worked with a diverse group of people of all ages and types of injuries. With great experience, she can intuitively zero in on the source of your health problem and create the most effective treatment plan for you.
Dr K joined The Joint in 2022 and works at both the McDowell Mountain Ranch (Scottsdale) and Tempe Shops locations. “My favorite thing about being a Chiropractor for the Joint is being able to focus on delivering excellent patient care without having to run the business side of a Chiropractic practice which can be a distraction. I love the opportunity to share my understanding of natural health and healing with my patients”. Being a Doctor of Chiropractic is a calling for me and I love to help people who had lost hope in their body’s ability to heal itself. The power that made the body…heals the body and I feel it’s a privilege to help guide my patients back to good health and give them strategies to maintain it, which happens to be right in line with the purpose and values of The Joint.
Dr K has a special focus on caring for athletes of all ages from weekend warriors to the pros. She was the Official team Chiropractor for the Indiana Twisters professional indoor soccer team and the Indianapolis Ice Professional hockey team as well as athletes with The Indianapolis Colts and some IndyCar drivers.
Dr K is also a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner and has postdoctorate training in the evaluation and treatment of the extremity joints like the shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, knee and hip joints in addition to the spinal joints.
Dr K has three sons that have all had Chiropractic care since birth. They are all in college and one of them ,Jack, goes to ASU and works for The Joint as a Wellness Coordinator. In her spare time Dr K likes to walk and train her Australian Shepherd Jax. She also attends seminars to expand her knowledge. Recently, she became board certified and licensed in Acupuncture.
On a personal note, if you opened Dr K’s refrigerator you would find it full of Trader Joe’s food. The coolest thing she’s ever done was snorkeling with her family in Maui and being surrounded by giant sea turtles and dolphins. She really appreciates the power and beauty of nature. The four people she would most love to host for a dinner party would be DD Palmer (founder of Chiropractic), Pope John Paul II, Andrea Bocelli and John Lennon because they are all healers in their own right and I think I could learn a lot from them.
Dr. Jeffrey David Knutsen, D.C. or Dr. K graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 1983.
Dr. K has one son who is an engineer at Toyota. When Dr. K is not working he enjoys motorcyling and scuba diving. He has been scuba diving in Mexico, California, and Fiji.
Dr. Steven Lujan (you can call him Dr. Steven) joined The Joint in October of 2022. He is stationed at the McDowell Mountain Village location in Scottsdale on Wednesdays, as well as the Tempe Shops locations on Thursdays.
For chiropractic school, he attended Southern California University of Health Sciences and graduated in 2020. He also attended Arizona State University where he studied Kinesiology and graduated in 2012.
The best aspect of being in the chiropractic field is the ability to help the body heal and recover so that others may live life to their full potential and reach their goals. Another great characteristic of chiropractic care is utilizing a holistic approach to healthcare.
He previously worked at clinics in Fullerton, California, as well as Chandler and Phoenix.
Dr. Steven was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, but grew up in Ahwatukee, Arizona.
In the doctor’s spare time, he enjoys playing golf, hiking, spending time with his family, traveling, listening to music and attending concerts. He also enjoys watching sports. He is a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys, which has allowed him to develop a very thick skin and a strong character (this year is our year)!
Dr. Steven has been receiving chiropractic care since he was 10 years old. After consistent chiropractic treatment helped him recover from several sports, back, shoulder and nerve-related injuries, Dr. Steven decided to pursue chiropractic as a profession. He also worked as a chiropractic assistant for 5 years following his education at ASU, which solidified his decision to become a chiropractor.
The best thing about working at The Joint is: Working at multiple locations provides the opportunity to treat a wide range of patients with various conditions, allowing Dr. Steven to continuously hone his chiropractic skills so that he may help patients recover quickly.
The one thing in Dr. Steven’s fridge/cabinet that he must have is coffee – it’s a must-have to start the day!
Four “famous” people, living or dead, who would comprise Dr. Steven’s perfect dinner party include: Steve Jobs, Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, and Albert Einstein.
The coolest thing Dr. Steven has ever done is attend multiple music festivals in one year.
