My name is Michael Dutton, and I am the Chiropractor at The Joint in University Hills. My patients call me Dr. Dutton or Dr. Mike (I’m not that picky about it). I joined The Joint in 2018, and I began working as the lead doctor in University Hills in June of 2018. After studying pre-medicine for two years of undergraduate school at Mississippi College, in Clinton, Mississippi, I went on to chiropractic school. I graduated from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 2006. Since graduating, I have practiced in several cities in Georgia, as well as Piura, Peru, before moving to Denver in 2015. The best thing about practicing chiropractic is that we get great results without drugs or surgery. It is a great feeling when a patient no longer needs to take medication because their headaches/neck pain/lower back pain are gone! The second best thing about being in this field is helping people maintain a healthy spine after we get them out of pain. You only get one spine, make the best out of it!
I grew up all over the midwest- I have lived in 9 different states. I enjoy spending time with my wife, reading, going for walks, and traveling. My wife’s name is Katie, and we have been married for 5 years. She is my best friend and the smartest person I know. We both work a lot, so we don’t have kids or pets, but we do have nieces and nephews that we like to spoil. I like spicy food and especially spicy sauces, so our fridge is always stocked with hot sauces we pick up on our travels. I’m a sucker for a local specialty.
My parents have a friend who is a chiropractor, and when I was in college, he sat me down and told me “our bodies are designed to be healthy and well-aligned. Unfortunately, we mess things up with poor posture, falls, wrecks, and many other problems. As a chiropractor, I move the bone back into place, and the body’s healing systems take over from there.” That made more sense to me on a deeper level than any other specialty, so I applied for early admission to chiropractic school within a week.
One of the best things about working for The Joint is the wide variety of people I get to meet and help. Because of our unique model, I even get to adjust people from out of state as they travel. Plus, I love the mission of making quality wellness care convenient and affordable to our patients.
My perfect dinner party would be composed of the following 4 people:
Teddy Roosevelt- I loved reading about the “Rough Riders” when I was a kid, and I bet he would have some fascinating stories.
Elon Musk- a visionary genius who has made impressive strides across multiple disciplines.
Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain)- another childhood favorite with stories for days.
Amelia Earhart- the only person to win Nobel prizes in two different sciences. We owe a lot to the work she did, and I would love to hear her talk to Elon Musk.
When I was 29 years old, I moved to South America to help open a practice in northern Peru. The city where we opened was called Piura, and it had a population of roughly 400,000 people. The clinic we opened was the first full-time chiropractic office, and we saw over two thousand new patients in my 2 years there. I was able to help people who had (in some cases) nowhere else to turn.
We had patients who were able to get out of wheelchairs for the first time in decades after receiving treatment in our office. Many of our patients had been suffering with pain for many years and were desperate for help. It was a great honor to be able to help people in such bad situations.
