Dr. Brent D. Siemens became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2019 when he began serving residents in the Oklahoma City area, where he continues doing the work he finds so rewarding.
“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is that we are able to get people out of pain,” he says. “Another great thing about being a chiropractor is that we usually improve the patients’ quality of life.”
Dr. Brent, as his patients call him, is a fourth-degree black belt in judo and fifth-degree in aikido. He and wife Kathy met while he was getting his doctorate at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa. They have been married more than three decades and have two grown sons -- and a German shepherd.
Raised in Midwest City, his best friend’s sister was studying pre-med in an effort to become a chiropractor and was a major influence in his decision to pursue the chiropractic path. “I’ve been practicing for nearly four decades and I’ve seen my share of patients get better even after other professions told them they could not be helped,” he says. “That’s probably the best validation one could have for chiropractic.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Just a few years into his career, 1989, Dr. Brent got the opportunity to treat the rock band Chicago. He eventually treated other bands such as Def Leppard, the Scorpions, singer Robert Plant, and illusionist David Copperfield. “It was an honor to treat each and every one of them,” he says.
If he could bring together any figures from history for his ideal dinner party, Dr. Brent would include Jigoro Kano and Morihei Ueshiba, the founders of judo and aikido, respectively; Jesus, and neuroscience author Dr. Joe Dispenza.
The martial arts are obviously a big part of Dr. Brent’s life, and some of his most rewarding moments outside the office have come from watching students he trained advance in their knowledge, skill, and ranking. “My instructors would always tell me that ‘you learn as much or more, by teaching, as the one you teach,’” he says. “I found that to be a profound truth.”
Another profound truth was something that his father would often say: “A hundred years from now, we’ll never know the difference,” which led Dr. Brent to dispense his own best advice: “Don’t worry about what others think of you; do your best, and that is enough.”
Dr. Crystal Martin became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when she began serving residents in the Oklahoma City area, where she continues doing the work she finds so rewarding.
“Chiropractic is a combination of the art and science of spinal manipulation,” she says. “It’s gratifying that I can use my hands, and the power of touch, to help a patient’s body heal.
“I love that chiropractic is a drug-free approach to health. I love that chiropractic focuses on prevention, as opposed to symptom treatment.”
Dr. Crystal, as her patients call her, was born in Norman and raised in Moore. “It’s a fantastic place to raise a family,” she says. “I especially love how there are always folks in Oklahoma willing to lend a hand and help each other out.”
Although now back in the metro OKC area, she worked previously in Auburn, Calif., and the Washington towns of Eatonville and Olympia.
If anyone ever suggests that a long-distance relationship can’t work, Dr. Crystal has some compelling evidence that it can. She and her husband of a decade meet online regularly while he works for a large tech company in California.
She remains at home with their daughter, son, and a menagerie of pets that includes a Great Dane and French bulldog. “When I’m not working, I am swimming or at an amusement park, riding all the thrill rides with my kiddos,” she says. “I want to make as many memories with them as possible.”
Spare time is rare, but she does love a book with a cup of tea or glass of wine before bed. She also enjoys carving out time to do some weightlifting for her workouts.
Dr. Crystal graduated from Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in zoology and earned her doctorate of chiropractic from Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas.
“I love when a patient has never experienced chiropractic, or they are a bit skeptical, and we are able to help them out on the first visit,” she says. “It’s like magic.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
An avid reader, Dr. Crystal loves books in which women lead unconventional lives, such as Out of Africa and Savage Beauty. “I read fiction for pleasure, and the most beautifully written book of this past year for me has been A Gentleman in Moscow,” she says. “The dialogue is superb.”
The title of her biography would be called Memories Over Things “because I want to live a life that is rich in memories with my family and friends,” she says. “When I am physically unable, I want to be able to reflect on times shared together, not look over a mountain of stuff that I’ve accumulated over the years.”
If she could bring together any characters from history together for the party to end all parties, she would include writer/artist Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald; author Isak Dinesen, former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, poet/playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay, South African President Nelson Mandela, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, and actors Sean Connery and Alan Rickman.
