Meet The Doctors
Dr. Durham Maples became part of The Joint Chiropractic team in 2017 as an associate in the Lexington SC clinic location and recently was named Clinic Director at Harbison. He received his doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 1987.
“I love to work with the best doctor in the universe, the human body,” Dr. Maples says. “Watching the human body heal itself when the nervous system is freed to function properly is what excites me about this profession on a daily basis.”
Raised in Ocala FL, Dr. Maples practiced in Lugoff SC before moving to practice chiropractic with The Joint in Columbia.
When he’s not working, you’ll find Dr. Maples playing chess and reading detective novels (especially Nero Wolf), since he enjoys solving mysteries, and the Bible for the good values to live by.
Dr. Maples became a believer in chiropractic when he saw how chiropractic helped his father, and he gets fulfillment out of his patient stories, “I adjusted a man that was only able to sleep upright in a chair. He had not been able to sleep in his bed for 7 years. When he traveled to hotels, he would bring his chair with him! After receiving continuous adjustments, he was finally able to sleep comfortably in his bed.”
“I love working at the Harbison The Joint clinic because the activity in the clinic and regular visits by new patients means it never gets boring,” Dr. Maples says.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Maples obviously has a great sense of humor and states that the one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is “cold air; because without it you only have an expensive box filled with rotten food!”
If he was to share a meal with any famous foursome in history, he would choose Ronald Reagan and his mother, and John Wayne and his mother. “There would have to be a lot of great stories among these people, because your mother always tells your business about when you were a little boy.”
Dr. Maples says the coolest thing he has ever done is visit Walt Disney World on the second day it opened. “It encompassed making memories with the people that I love,” he says, “and that lasted for a lifetime. It taught me that even though those memories are nostalgic, Disney was about always looking forward because that is where the entertainment in life comes from”
If he were to provide a bit of advice, it would be to “remove your emotions from all decision making. Decisions that you make in your life out of anger, fear or any other emotion usually end up being bad decisions.”
Dr. Kayla Cooper has had a wide reach as a member of The Joint Chiropractic team since joining the staff in March 2019; she works out of several different locations, including Forest Acres, Killian Crossing, Harbison and Lexington.
She majored in biology and earned a minor in chemistry at Presbyterian College in Clinton before getting her doctorate of chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida.
“The thing I love about being in the chiropractic field is being able to offer all people help regardless of anything else; everyone with a spine living in earth’s gravity is a great candidate for an excellent chiropractic patient,” she says. “It’s also gratifying to help with major current crisis, specifically the care of our military members and veterans and those who seek musculoskeletal pain relief through opioids. These populations of people are primed to be taken care of by excellent chiropractors. In doing so, our country will be healthier and have better posture.”
A product of Lexington, Dr. Cooper worked previously in Irmo and Orangeburg. In her spare time she loves traveling, fishing, going to the beach, and relaxing with friends and family, including husband Tyler, their two sons, and a German short-haired pointer named Rambo.
She had chiropractic ingrained in her at an early age.
“I was born in Iowa, less than an hour away from the oldest and first chiropractic college, Palmer,” Dr. Cooper says. “As my sister and I moved around with our family, our mother would always take us to see the chiropractor no matter where we lived, and she would call around looking for a ‘Palmer doc.’ So I knew that if I was going to become the ‘family chiropractor’ that my family always envisioned, I would go to Palmer.
“After college, I was unsure what to do, and was enrolled into the RN program at Midlands Tech. I realized one day that I wouldn’t be an awesome nurse or MD because I am very emotional and not good at bad news -- or bodily fluids. It was the second summer after I graduated from Presbyterian College that I started chiropractic school at Palmer in Florida. ... It was a perfect fit for me and I loved it.”
In her current role, she is able to practice where she grew up.
“I thoroughly enjoy being able to treat people from all sides of Columbia and enjoy being able to explore different sides of town as well,” she says.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Cooper says the one thing she always keeps in her refrigerator is filtered water “because water is the most important thing you can have.”
If she could have any four people from history at a fantasy dinner party, Dr. Cooper says she would include chiropractic pioneer BJ Palmer, Hippocrates, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and baseball player Jim Abbott.
“Palmer developed this fine profession we call chiropractic, and Hippocrates was the father of modern medicine, so I would love to have a scholarly discussion with them about the current state of health and healthcare in the world,” she says. “Oprah is one of the most influential figures of my lifetime. I have watched her since I knew how to watch a television, and her journey as a woman in a man’s world is one that profoundly inspires me.
“As for Jim Abbott, I had his baseball care when I was a young girl, and the idea that he can become a major league pitcher with only one hand is very inspirational; what an example to the world that you can reach your dreams no matter your physical limitations.”
The coolest thing she has ever done, she says, “was creating two brand new humans.”
“Outside of that, participating in a 10-day clinic abroad in the West Indies was the coolest thing I’ve done. I had the privilege of being selected to go to an island called Bequia -- the second island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines -- to treat the population with chiropractic care,” Dr. Cooper says. “The whole island is 7 square miles and economically categorized as third world. The people were so excited that we were there, and we went to all corners of the island and every school on the island.
“Treating so many kids was the highlight for me. Watching them and their teachers and parents enjoy the benefits of chiropractic, which they do not typically have access to, was a real life-changing experience. The pure joy and happiness that exuded from the population on Bequia is something I try to carry with me all the time.
“And one of the bars had whale vertebra as bar stools. Coolest thing I have ever seen.”
