The Connection Between Spine Health and Blood Sugar

The spine houses a significant portion of the central nervous system, and works to protect it and keep it safe from traumatic damage. When misalignments in the spine occur, it can put excessive pressure on the spinal cord, and interfere with the delivery of messages from the brain to the body and back. This interference in the nervous system’s communication efforts can lead to problems throughout the body.

Communication is Key

The nervous system is the system of the body through which the brain communicates. If you skin your knee, your brain tells your body to start the blood clotting process and produce a scab. If you have just eaten a meal, your brain tells your digestive system it’s time to get going. Similarly, your brain helps regulate blood sugar levels in the body, so you maintain homeostasis. The pancreas is important here, because it secretes insulin and helps breaks down the nutrients you digest. If the brain cannot properly communicate with the pancreas, say as a result of spinal subluxation, then we can see how malfunction occurs.

Continuing Research

More and more research continues to be conducted on the concept of chiropractic care as a treatment for blood sugar abnormalities. One of the most intriguing studies relevant to this issue was released in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, & Family Health.  A child was experiencing significant problems with stabilizing blood sugar. A subluxation in her cervical spine was found, and she was treated with chiropractic care over the course of two months. Amazingly, her A1C level dropped from 7.2 to 6.5% (normal is from 4-6% depending on the individual), and her daily insulin requirements decreased significantly as well. These findings point to both the importance of proper nervous system alignment as well as the potential for chiropractic intervention to produce results.

Chiropractic and wellness go hand in hand. As a part of your regular health regimen, chiropractic care can ward off illness and disorder, treat existing conditions, and restore the body to a better state. Spinal subluxation can cause a myriad of problems, so stop them before they start, through regular chiropractic care.
