A Chiropractor's Guide to Vacuuming

By Brandi Swieter

The question of how to vacuum may seem like a no brainer, but many people would be surprised to hear they’ve actually been handling the chore all wrong. There are certain ways to vacuum that can put extra strain on the back, causing pain to set in quickly. Following a chiropractor’s guide to vacuuming is the best approach to ensuring no pain occurs while tackling the household task.

Avoid Bending

Many people vacuum the floor by bending forward at the waist and pushing themselves and the vacuum cleaner toward other areas of the room. Bending like this should be avoided because it can wreak havoc on the body, putting extra pressure on the middle to lower sections of the back in particular.

Stand Upright

Rather than bending forward, the better option is to stand upright. Keep the chest up and out instead of allowing it to slouch forward. Maintaining proper posture like this will prevent pain from setting in fast. It is best to use the legs and step forward when needing to reach another spot on the floor. Remain tall and step forward with one leg, almost into a lunge position.

Switch Sides

It is never wise to handle a task with one arm or one side of the body only. Strain will set in quickly, and that side will be far too overworked. Instead, switch sides often. Lunge forward with the right leg a few times, keeping the right hand on the vacuum cleaner, and then switch to lunging with the left leg instead for a few turns. Switching back and forth will ensure both sides of the body get worked out and that neither side is getting too overworked at once.

Tackle One Room at a Time

Too many people attempt to go through and vacuum every single room of the house in one sitting. The better alternative is to only tackle one room at a time, giving breaks between each session. Breaking up the activity like this will prevent the body from being overworked and allowing pain to set in because of it.

Vacuum with caution from now on to ensure a pain-free experience while completing the chore. Back pain can be debilitating, so avoiding it when possible is usually the best approach. By following a chiropractor’s guide to vacuuming and tackling other household tasks, people can keep their bodies safe. Anyone who does experience an aching back after vacuuming or other chores can seek the assistance of a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic.
