Technology a Main Factor in Musculoskeletal Problems

As technology becomes integrated further and further into society in developed countries across the world yet as time passes we seem to find more and more problems associated with this high volume of technology use. Whether it be the potential radiation from cellular phones harming our brains, the bright blue lights from televisions harming our eyes, or the ease of technology promoting a sedentary lifestyle, at some point it feels as if there are more negative elements to a technologically advanced society than positive ones.

One area where specialists are starting to see a negative correlation is in chiropractic care. A recent study published by the British Chiropractic Association has pointed to an overwhelming increase of back pain and musculoskeletal problems in the younger population in the United Kingdom, specifically aged 16-24. With 86% of this population claiming to have back pain at some point in their lives, the end result is concerning.

In an effort to determine root causes, many chiropractic specialists throughout the United Kingdom are looking to technology as a determinant in these musculoskeletal problems. The increased amount of time spent sitting, slouching, and hunching over a computer screen does not bode well for the proper mechanics and alignment of the spine from top to bottom. It is understandable that for many people, namely the portion of the population whose professional lives are centered around the use of the computer, that there are no alternatives to decreasing the amount of time spent wit technology. However, there are alternatives to how we spend that time.

We can make adjustments to the process in which we use technology in order to mediate the potential musculoskeletal health hazards that are lurking behind the screen. Adequate posture, good hydration, and the division of work streams into shorter intervals can all help individuals void off musculoskeletal problems, especially when the focus of their work is on technology.

Whether it involves looking at our cell phones on the train or trying to get that necessary report done before the end of the work day, our health should come first. Musculoskeletal problems can be crippling and can significantly decrease our quality of life. With certain modifications, we can ensure that we are living to the best of our ability free of any potential threats to our muscles and bones.
