3 Reasons You Need a Workout Buddy
By Virginia Laird
Have you considered finding a workout buddy? For those who struggle to find the drive to get to the gym daily, this can be a game changer. I know this to be true from personal experience. Research suggests that those who exercise with a friend (or group of friends) have more success maintaining the habit. Health and wellness experts suggest that having a buddy at the gym can be beneficial in a variety of ways, including:
- A workout buddy offers words of encouragement
- Having friends to exercise with keeps the workout fun
- You need to be needed to help keep you moving
A Workout Buddy Offers Words of Encouragement
There are times while at the gym that I need someone to remind me that I can finish the exercise I planned to do. This is where it is helpful to have a friend. Luckily, about two years ago, I found a friend who does this for me. Like many others, I far too often want to quit because the workout may seem too difficult. I haven’t done so yet because my friend is by my side reminding me that I can do it. A friend at the gym can do the same for you.
Having Friends to Exercise with Keeps the Workout Fun
Seriously, how often is a workout exciting? Sure, there are times, but more often than not, it is just putting in the time to get the desired results. This is where a workout buddy can be helpful. For many, a good friend offers laughs and good conversation which can help pass the time. If you are looking to put some excitement in your workout, consider asking a friend to join you on your next trip to the gym.
You Need to be Needed to Help Keep You Moving
Everyone needs to be needed. Although you may not be aware, this means you need to be needed as well. When was the last time that you were needed and did not show up? Being the workout buddy for your friend can provide the satisfaction of being needed. Whether your friend appears to have their act together or not, there are times where they need to hear the same words of encouragement you have been given.
Start thinking today about your friends and who may be willing to be your exercise friend. You may have more than one. And you may be an answer to their prayers. Now head back to the gym knowing you and your friends are ready to push each other to meet the goals you have set.
