Phoenix Chiropractic Care Extends Relief To Patients' Throbbing Heads

Could chiropractic care relieve painful headaches?

A 2011 manuscript hoped to provide evidence-based protocol options for the chiropractic maintenance of chronic headaches in those who were more than 18 years old. Clinical measures acting as objective surrogate markers for cervicogenic headache (CGH) discomfort had yet to be established. In this research, the connections between physical examination (PE) measures and self-reported CGH results is discussed.

This serves as an exploratory analysis of data elicited by attention control PE sourced from a randomized clinical trial. Using 80 participants, 40 were randomly assigned to eight treatments, which included spinal manipulative therapy, and eight series of PE over the course of eight weeks. The other 40 participants didn’t receive any PE. Physical examination involved motion palpation of both the cervical and upper thoracic areas, as well as active cervical range of motion (ROM) and its pain impacts. It also included the algometric pain threshold that was measured through articular pillars.

Personal results included both CGH and neck pain, along with disability; the frequency of CGH headaches and relevant disability days were also recorded. The connections seen between PE and individual outcomes were evaluated through linear models, and were adjusted for sociodemographic alterations between group members.

Initially, both CGH and disability day occurrences were linked with cervical active ROM, while neck pain and disability were linked with ROM-initiated pain. Following the last therapy session, participants’ pain thresholds were greatly influenced by chiropractic improvement.

In conclusion, cervical ROM was greatly associated with the starting headache experience. That being said, after four weeks of treatment, pain thresholds were beginning to show steady improvement. Over time, PE measures were more strongly linked with the self-reported improved headache results.
