How Financial Stress May Link to Depression

Nearly every American suffers from some sort of stress. Whether you’re over-worked, busy with the kids, or consumed with debt – there are lot of stressors in our lives. Most would report the root cause of their stress being some sort of financial trouble – a recent poll found that 72 percent of respondents reported feeling stressed out about money within the previous month. Half of the respondents stated they have no emotional support and feeling depressed as a result of their stress.

When people suffer financial stress (or any sort for that matter), it can lead to depression. Symptoms may start out small but can snowball quickly, especially if the financial situation becomes worse over time. A vicious cycle of anxiety and depression may occur when overdue bills arrive in the mail or bill collectors call. This can lead to avoiding the problem, causing further worry and guilt. This pattern can be very difficult to overcome.

Financial stress may be caused by debt, loss of a job, or living beyond your means. All of these can cause different kinds of depression depending on each person and their situation. For example, losing a good job can make a person fearful for the future. On the other hand, it may be the loss of identity or a fear of being a failure. All of these thoughts can cause sadness or worry of varying degrees. But if things start to become out of control regarding your emotions, it may be time to consider professional help.

Sometimes stress can become so out of control that it changes our mental health. In these cases, it may be a good idea to seek out a wellness plan. Speaking with a free financial counselor may ease your mind about your debt. A career counselor can also be a good resource if you’re looking for that next step in your job path. A doctor should also be consulted, in case there are any underlying problems. With all of these people on your team, you’ll be back on your feet before you know it.
